When Jaya B joked Big B might call their marriage the biggest mistake

When Jaya Bachchan joked that Amitabh Bachchan might call their marriage the biggest mistake of his life, said she didn't want granddaughter Navya to never get married

Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan have been married for more than five decades. In an interview a while ago, the actress had opened up on their marriage and also her general views on the institution. The ‘Guddi’ actress had admitted that she would advice her granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda to never get married, as she spoke about the younger generation and their take on relationships today. The veteran actor shared her evolving thoughts on love and companionship, even joking that Amitabh Bachchan could possibly call marriage the “biggest mistake” of his life. Reflecting on generational differences and modern family structures, Jaya admitted that society has changed significantly over the years. Speaking about granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda, she said in an interview on Mojo Story with Barkha Dutt, “Yes, absolutely. I am a grandmother now, Navya turns 28 in a few days. I am too old to advise young girls today on how to bring up children. Things have changed so much. Today, these little children are so smart and they will smart you.”She also questioned why marriage continues to be treated as a social necessity. Sharing her thoughts with characteristic humour, she said, “I don’t want Navya to get married. Delhi ka ladoo hai khao toh mushkil na khao toh mushkil. Just enjoy life. You don’t have to make it (signals at a pen and a paper)… we didn’t even sign the register in old times, later on, we got to know that we have to sign the register, and we signed the register after I don’t know how many years of our marriage. That means we were living illegally.”A moment from the interview that quickly grabbed attention came when she was asked whether Amitabh Bachchan holds similar opinions about marriage. Responding playfully, she said, “I have not asked him. He might say that ‘biggest mistake of my life’, but I don’t want to hear that.”Jaya Bachchan also reflected seriously on how her views on relationships have evolved after decades of married life. She and Amitabh Bachchan have been together for 52 years, making them one of Hindi cinema’s longest-standing couples.Despite expressing modern views on commitment today, she admitted that her own relationship with Amitabh began with deep affection from the very beginning. When asked if she remembered falling in love, she replied, “Do you have to dig into old wounds? I have been married for the last 52 years to the same man. Isse jada pyaar main nahin kar sakti hoon.” She further added, “It will sound outdated after me saying that don’t get married… It was love at first sight.”The couple tied the knot in 1973.
