Timothée Chalamet stays quiet amid backlash in China: Report

Timothée Chalamet remains silent on opera backlash during ‘Marty Supreme’ premiere in China - Reports

Actor Timothée Chalamet is deftly avoiding the backlash for his statements about ballet and opera as he turns his attention to the global promotion of ‘Marty Supreme.’ During his vibrant press tour across Japan and China, crowds have shown overwhelming support, successfully shifting the narrative to his highly anticipated film project.

Timothée Chalamet has not addressed the backlash over his recent remarks about ballet and opera, instead, he is keeping the focus on his film ‘Marty Supreme’ as he promotes it overseas. The actor, 30, sparked criticism after comments he made during a town hall event with Matthew McConaughey. Even as the debate continues, Chalamet has continued his international press tour, including stops in Japan and China, where fans welcomed him warmly and turned attention back to his upcoming release.

Timothée Chalamet ‘Marty Supreme’ China promotion

According to Variety, Chalamet made the remarks during a CNN & Variety Town Hall event last month. He said he did not want to work in art forms “where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares about this anymore.’” He then added a joking disclaimer, saying, “I just lost 14 cents in viewership, I just took shots for no reason.” Since then, the actor has not publicly responded to the criticism and has instead continued promoting ‘Marty Supreme’ abroad.

Timothée Chalamet ballet opera backlash reactions

According to Network 18, the response from artists and public figures was swift. Grammy-winning opera singer Isabelle Leonard called the comments “shocking” and said Chalamet sounded “ineloquent and narrow minded” about art. Doja Cat also weighed in on TikTok. She first criticized him but later changed course, admitting her reaction had more to do with attention than strong feelings about the issue. She said she “knew nothing about opera” and described her first video as “virtue signaling.”

Timothée Chalamet’s Oscar Hopes Hit After ‘No One Cares About Ballet Or Opera’ Remark Ignites FURY

While the backlash grew, Chalamet kept sharing updates from his film tour. On March 6, he posted Instagram photos from Japan as he traveled through Asia with ‘Marty Supreme’ director Josh Safdie. A few days later, on March 10, the pair attended the film’s China premiere in Beijing. There, fans gave Chalamet a large tapestry that praised him as the “absolute Supreme Marty” and the “King of the Silver Screen.” The reaction showed a very different mood from the criticism unfolding elsewhere. For now, Chalamet appears set on highlighting the film rather than the controversy. ‘Marty Supreme’ remains one of his biggest projects ahead of the 2026 Academy Awards, and his Asia tour has kept the spotlight on audience excitement. As debate over his comments continues, Chalamet’s public stance has stayed the same. He has said nothing further and let the promotion of ‘Marty Supreme’ lead the conversation. Go to Source
