Sunaina recalls crash dieting led to tuberculosis meningitis

Hrithik Roshan's sister Sunaina recalls crash dieting led to tuberculosis meningitis; parents Rakesh Roshan, Pinkie Roshan react

Sunaina Roshan, sister of Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan, has opened up about a life-threatening health crisis she suffered after following a crash diet in 2001. In a recent social media video, Sunaina revealed that her obsession with rapid weight loss weakened her immunity and led to tuberculosis meningitis, a condition that left her family fearing for her life.As part of her ongoing health journey series, Sunaina shared details of the difficult period and urged people to avoid taking shortcuts when it comes to health and nutrition.

‘I had no awareness for two to three days’

Recalling the ordeal, Sunaina said that after being hospitalised, she remained unaware of her surroundings for several days.”In Part 1, I shared how crash dieting led me to the hospital. What happened next could have changed my life forever. For two to three days, I had no awareness. My family was told by Dr. Udwadia that it could lead to paralysis, loss of eyesight, or even a coma. They didn’t know what would happen next,” she said. She added that the uncertainty surrounding her condition deeply affected her family members.

Hrithik Roshan prayed for her recovery

Sunaina revealed that her brother Hrithik spent a night praying for her well-being at a temple during the critical phase of her illness.”My brother even spent the night at a temple praying for me to get well. The doctor said the first sign of recovery would be that I would ask for food, and after days, that’s exactly what I did. That one moment changed everything for my family,” she shared.

A long road to recovery

The health scare resulted in a lengthy recovery process. Sunaina revealed that she spent a month in hospital after being diagnosed with tuberculosis meningitis and was then confined to her home for another four months to prevent a relapse.”I was in the hospital for a month after being diagnosed with tuberculosis meningitis. Then I was stuck at home for four more months to avoid a relapse. Heavy medication, all because my immunity had crashed. And the reason? Crash dieting,” she said.Reflecting on the experience, she stressed that no weight-loss goal is worth risking one’s health.”That’s when I realized no goal is worth risking your life. Always choose nourishment over shortcuts. If this made you think twice, share it with someone who needs to hear this,” she added.

Sunaina shares an important lesson

Alongside the video, Sunaina posted a heartfelt note about the incident and the lessons she learned from it.”In 2001, a crash diet led me down a path I never imagined. What followed was one of the most crucial chapters of my life and a lesson I’ll never forget. It completely changed the way I think about health, nourishment and the shortcuts we’re often tempted to take,” she wrote.

Pinkie and Rakesh Roshan react

Sunaina’s post received emotional responses from her parents, Pinkie Roshan and veteran filmmaker Rakesh Roshan.Pinkie Roshan recalled the difficult days the family endured during Sunaina’s treatment.”Reliving your story after 25 years is overwhelming for me. I remember how you fought it so strongly mentally and physically. Dr. Farokh Udwadia finally, after three weeks, said you’re out of danger now, but you have a long journey ahead for full recovery. God bless you, my daughter, for your courage and will to fight and survive,” she wrote.Rakesh Roshan also praised his daughter’s courage, commenting, “Sharing your experience is giving strength to many.”Sunaina later responded to her parents, thanking them for their unwavering support, love and encouragement throughout her recovery journey.

How it all began

Earlier, while introducing her health series, Sunaina had revealed that the issue began after a leg injury left her bedridden. Determined to lose weight, she turned to crash dieting, unaware that it would eventually compromise her immune system and lead to severe health complications.Through her story, Sunaina hopes to raise awareness about the dangers of extreme dieting and encourage people to adopt healthier and more sustainable approaches to fitness and weight loss.
