Sonu Nigam reflects on how Sandese Aate Hai changed his career at Border 2 song launch, 'People believed in me because of this song'

Singer Sonu Nigam turned reflective at the launch of Ghar Kab Aaoge, a key track from Sunny Deol-starrer Border 2, held at the frontier Tanot area in Jaisalmer on Friday. Addressing BSF jawans at the India–Pakistan border, the singer spoke about the lasting impact of Sandese Aate Hai from the 1997 classic Border and how it became a defining moment in his career.

‘This song, this film, this team changed my life’

Looking back at his journey, Sonu recalled recording Sandese Aate Hai nearly three decades ago and how it reshaped how the industry viewed him.“This song (Sandese Aate Hai), this film (Border), this team has been a very auspicious team for me. I still haven’t forgotten. We sang this song 30 years ago. I sang this song in 1995. The film was released in 1997. I used to get songs then but not such important songs,” he said.Sonu added that the emotional depth of the track earned him a new identity as a singer. “This song gave me the title of a serious singer for the first time. People believed in me because of this song.”

Ghar Kab Aaoge launched at the India–Pakistan border

The Ghar Kab Aaoge song launch was staged at the India–Pakistan border in Jaisalmer, with fireworks lighting up the auditorium near the Tanot Mata Temple. The event was attended by BSF jawans, creating a powerful and patriotic atmosphere.The evening began with a soulful rendition of the iconic Rajasthani folk song Kesariya Balam Aao Ni Padharo Mhare Desh, which received loud applause from the audience. Following the performance, the reimagined version of Ghar Kab Aaoge was unveiled, instantly striking an emotional chord. Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan and the rest of the film’s cast were present in Jaisalmer for the launch, witnessing the audience’s heartfelt response.The new version of Ghar Kab Aaoge has been recreated by Mithoon, while the original composition was by Anu Malik. Fresh lyrics have been penned by Manoj Muntashir Shukla, with the original words written by Javed Akhtar.The song features vocals by Roopkumar Rathod, Sonu Nigam, Arijit Singh, Vishal Mishra and Diljit Dosanjh.

Sonu Nigam also shared the song on Instagram, penning a heartfelt note alongside it. “Some songs aren’t just melodies; they are emotions that belong to the soul of our nation. 🇮🇳 Being a part of this song for Border 2 felt like a beautiful homecoming. It is rare for an artist to relive such magic, and I feel truly blessed that this journey continues. This one is for our brave soldiers and the families waiting for them.” Directed by Anurag Singh, Border 2 features a powerful ensemble cast led by Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty, alongside Mona Singh, Medha Rana, Sonam Bajwa and Anya Singh. Presented by Gulshan Kumar & T-Series in association with J.P. Dutta’s J.P. Films, the film is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, J.P. Dutta and Nidhi Dutta.
