Seoul HC upholds Taeil’s 3.5-year prison sentence in rape case

Seoul High Court upholds Taeil's prison sentence; former NCT member to be jailed for 3.5 years in aggravated quasi-rape case

Former NCT member Taeil

Former NCT member Taeil’s prison sentence of three years and six months has been affirmed by the Seoul High Court, cementing the first-trial verdict for aggravated quasi-rape and keeping all ancillary sanctions intact, with coverage noting the court’s firm stance, as reported by MK Sports.

Appeal court’s stance

The Seoul High Court’s Criminal Division 11-3 left the original sentence unchanged for Taeil and two accomplices, aligning precisely with the lower court’s ruling of three years and six months each. The bench also maintained 40 hours of sex offender treatment and a five-year employment ban at institutions related to children, adolescents, and people with disabilities.

What the judges rejected

Judges dismissed appeals from both sides, concluding the sentence fit within reasonable bounds and refusing mitigation based on claims of voluntary surrender or post-facto remorse.Prosecutors had again urged a seven-year term at appeal citing the gravity and poor nature of the offense, but the panel declined to increase time served.

How the case unfolded

The case originates from June 2023, when an intoxicated foreign woman was assaulted while unconscious, a circumstance the court deemed especially grave given her vulnerability and unfamiliar setting.Taeil was remanded after first-instance sentencing, and related coverage documented his exit from group activities amid the legal process.

What remains in effect

Alongside incarceration, mandated treatment and employment restrictions will continue to apply, with the appellate ruling underscoring accountability over pleas for leniency.Co-defendants received the same prison terms and program orders, reflecting the court’s consistent view of joint culpability in the incident.
