Salman Khan to play iconic historical warrior in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's period film – Report

Salman Khan to play iconic historical figure in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s period film – Report

Following the box office disappointment of ‘Sikandar’, Salman Khan appears to be setting his sights on one of the most ambitious projects of his career, a big-budget period film to be directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and produced by Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment.

Salman Khan ‘blown away’ by the script

According to a Bollywood Hungama report, Salman Khan heard the script and was immediately on board. The superstar will reportedly portray one of the most celebrated figures from Indian history and is expected to undergo a significant physical transformation for the role. The film is being described as a true passion project for all involved, with Salman feeling that this character perfectly suits his larger-than-life screen presence. This would mark the first-ever collaboration between Salman Khan and both Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, the celebrated director behind ‘Rang De Basanti’ and ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, and Excel Entertainment. Discussions are currently ongoing; shooting dates and remuneration are among the key details still being finalised.

Salman Khan’s packed lineup before the period film

Before this period saga can take shape, Salman Khan has a packed slate of releases and productions to work through. His next theatrical outing is ‘Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace’, directed by Apoorva Lakhia, hitting cinemas on August 14, 2026, alongside Chitrangada Singh. The film has faced multiple delays ahead of its release.Simultaneously, Salman Khan is currently filming SVC63, a high-octane action entertainer directed by Vamshi Paidipally and produced by Dil Raju under Sri Venkateswara Creations. The film stars Nayanthara, marking her first collaboration with Salman, and is being targeted for an Eid 2027 release, with filming expected to wrap by August or September 2026.

Salman Khan’s first superhero film

Adding further excitement to his lineup, Salman Khan is also set to explore the superhero genre for the very first time. He is teaming up with celebrated creator duo Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, known for ‘The Family Man’ and ‘Farzi’, for a large-scale superhero comedy. The project is being produced by Atul Agnihotri, with Mythri Movie Makers reportedly in discussions to come on board as a studio partner.

When will the period film go on floors?

If everything falls into place, Salman Khan is expected to begin shooting the Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra period film by Summer 2027, right after wrapping the Raj and DK superhero project, setting up what could be one of the most eagerly awaited films of his career. Go to Source
