Following the passing of Malayalam actor, director and National Award winner Salim Kumar, many of his old interviews and personal reflections are being remembered by fans. He had once shared his thoughts about life, family and the idea of retirement from acting.

Salim Kumar – The veteran star of Malayalam cinema

Salim Kumar passed away at the age of 57 after facing health complications. He had been admitted to a private hospital in Kochi after his condition worsened. Reports stated that he was placed on ventilator support. The actor had also undergone a liver transplant years earlier following a diagnosis of liver cirrhosis.Salim Kumar remained one of Malayalam cinema’s most loved performers. He became famous for his impeccable comic timing and unforgettable characters. Over time, he also proved his strength as a serious performer through emotionally powerful roles.Born in Paravur, Salim Kumar started his artistic journey through mimicry performances. He entertained audiences on stage before eventually entering the film industry. His acting debut came with Ishtamanu Nooru Vattam in 1997. Initially, he appeared in small roles. Over the years, his film career expanded significantly and crossed more than 300 films.

When he spoke about quitting acting

Years ago, after receiving the National Award for ‘Adaminte Makan Abu’, reports claimed that Salim Kumar was planning to leave acting. During an exclusive conversation with ETimes, the actor addressed those rumours.”Yes, I am going to quit acting, but not now, only after three years. I’m 43 and will retire when I’m 46.”The statement surprised many at the time because the actor was enjoying a successful phase in his career.

Why Salim Kumar wanted to step away

Salim Kumar had also explained that his decision had nothing to do with losing interest in acting. Instead, he felt that life had several other responsibilities and priorities.“I want to retire not because I am bored of acting. But I realise that there are better things to do in life. I don’t want to limit myself as an actor alone. I am a son, husband and father of two children. I have to take care of their needs and concerns,”He further shared his thoughts about the idea of retirement in the film industry.“I believe, acting also has a retirement phase. Unfortunately, no one in the industry is ready to accept that.”

Looking back at his journey

Salim Kumar had also reflected on the changing pace of his work life and how his approach to films evolved with time.“Well, there was a time when I acted in four films a day. But now, I can afford to be more selective. I don’t do more than one film a day. Like any other actor, I also look for good scripts and want to portray some memorable characters on screen. Even two-year-old babies are dying; after all I could see, enjoy and attain so much in my 43 years on earth. I am happy and content.”Apart from acting, Salim Kumar also explored writing and direction. His film ‘Karutha Joothan’ later earned recognition at the Kerala State Film Awards. Today, his words and his work continue to stay with audiences. Go to Source
