Remo D’souza, wife on having first son out of wedlock: ‘I didn’t have faith’

Remo D'souza, wife Lizelle open up on having their first child out of wedlock and later marrying thrice: 'I didn't have faith in him'

Remo D’Souza and wife Lizelle have been married for the past 25 years and have two sons. While Remo has carved a niche as one of the best choreographers in the industry, he also turned director with movies like ‘Faltu’, ‘ABCD’ and more. In a recent interview, Remo and Lizelle spoke about their love story as they also opened up on his journey. The couple revealed that they were living in and had their first son out of wedlock. Remo shared that his parents were unaware of his relationship with Lizelle, while she revealed that her own father strongly disapproved. At a time when live-in relationships were still considered taboo, the couple chose to move in together without informing their families. Lizelle, who was just 20 then, had even secured an opportunity to work as a stewardess, but gave it up after Remo expressed his discomfort with long-distance relationships. She said during a chat with Curly Tales, “My mom knew I was madly in love with him,” she said, adding, “So I left my house and we started living together.”To avoid confrontation, Lizelle even told her parents that they had secretly married, “which wasn’t true.” Things took a dramatic turn when she became pregnant, a fact they initially kept hidden. Remo recalled a moment when his mother unexpectedly discovered the truth. Seeing Lizelle, she asked, “Yeh pet se hai? (Is she pregnant?)” Leaving Remo speechless, she turned to his father and said, “Dekho tumhare bete ne kya kia hai (See what your son has done).”Reflecting on how they stepped into parenthood before marriage, Lizelle admitted, “it happened with the flow and both of us didn’t realise. When you are 20, you don’t realise. I only have that excuse.” By then, her mother had also figured out that the earlier claim of a secret wedding was untrue. After their son was born, her parents insisted on a proper church wedding so the child could be baptised. “My son was born and my parents said you need to baptize him. They (the church) do not take mandir ka shaadi (wedding in a temple). ‘You have to get married in a church to baptize your son so you decide whether you want to baptize him or not’.”Despite this, Lizelle took time to agree to marriage. “It took me three months. He convinced me. Everyone convinced me after my son was born,” she said. She added, “I said, ‘Mereko na bharosa nahi hai (I don’t have faith).’ He said if we get married in church and if we register our wedding, there is no way I can do anything.” Remo added, “She was scared; she has no faith in me. I said, ‘What more do you want?’ We have a child. I am ready to get married wherever you say.”Even after becoming a mother, Lizelle admitted she often returned to her parents’ home whenever things got overwhelming. “Anytime anything would happen, I used to run away to my mother’s house and go to sleep. My mom would say, ‘What are you doing here? Your son is in the house. You need to go back’. Then I would come back home,” she shared, noting that during this time, Remo stepped up as a hands-on father. When asked if their son was present at their wedding, the couple smiled and confirmed that he was. In fact, they ended up marrying not once, but three times, a Christian ceremony, a Hindu wedding, and later, a vow renewal on their 20th anniversary. Remo humorously recalled the reason behind the second ceremony, saying someone had told Lizelle that men with a double crown marry twice, prompting her decision. “She said I will only get married to you two times,” he said with a laugh.Today, Remo and Lizelle have been together for over 25 years and are parents to two sons, Dhruv and Gabriel, with a story that is as unconventional as it is enduring.
