Ranveer moves to Karnataka HC to quash case over ‘Kantara’ mimicry

Ranveer Singh moves to Karnataka HC to quash case over ‘Kantara’ mimicry, seeks immediate hearing but the court says no special treatment

Apart from the success of his movie ‘Dhurandhar’, Ranveer Singh has been in the news for the case against him for allegedly hurting sentiments with him imitating the daiva from ‘Kantara Chapter 1’. The actor has now knocked on the doors of the Karnataka High Court, seeking to have a criminal case against him set aside. What he described as a playful tribute has now turned into a legal battle.Singh’s legal representatives have moved to the Karantaka HC and have maintained that there was no intent to insult anyone. According to them, the actor was merely expressing admiration for Rishab Shetty’s powerful performance and the film’s distinctive narrative style. In their submission before the court, his lawyers contended that a gesture of appreciation has been wrongly framed as wrongdoing. The petition says, in essence, “Ranveer’s sincere praise has been misread as a criminal act”.The defence also pointed out that Singh has already received two formal police notices, which they claim have placed him under “undue stress.” They sought an urgent, same-day hearing to resolve the matter swiftly and reduce the pressure. However, the bench declined to entertain the request.Justice M Nagaprasanna, who is presiding over the matter in Bengaluru, underscored that celebrity status does not translate into special treatment in court.Justice Nagaprasanna asked a pointed question: should a case get priority just because the accused is a Bollywood star? And what if it were a Hollywood celebrity instead? Would the courts race against time then?Despite repeated requests for immediate relief, the High Court refused to fast-track the hearing. Singh must now await the scheduled proceedings tomorrow, in line with the court’s usual process.
