After portraying a wide range of memorable characters—from a rebellious musician to a deaf-mute man and even a relentless force driven by revenge, Ranbir Kapoor believes stepping into the role of Lord Rama is among the most significant challenges of his career. In Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious adaptation of Ramayana, the actor takes on the role of the revered deity worshipped by billions of Hindus worldwide.During the Ramayana panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Ranbir appeared alongside co-star Yash, director Nitesh Tiwari, and producer Namit Malhotra. Speaking to Fanversation on the sidelines of the event, the actor reflected on the extensive preparation that went into portraying Lord Rama. Discussing whether his preparation involved a major physical transformation, Ranbir emphasised that the mental and spiritual journey was far more important. “I always feel that kind of preparation, making a body or action and dance, is kind of easy because that is a bit superficial. But to really understand the philosophy of Lord Rama deeply at this age and this point in my life was really important to embody this character. You want to give it your best and be simple and not complicated. You want to be someone with whom someone age to age 80 can relate. Understanding the teachings of Lord Rama was more important than the superficial transformation.” The actor revealed that his process involved deep study, guidance from scholars, and years of spiritual discipline. Explaining how he approached the character’s mindset, he said, “I read a lot, met with a lot of scholars. I practised yoga for two years. I had a guru called Suvir who used to sit and meditate with me for hours to get me really close to the teachings of Lord Rama. It’s really understanding the text because we have that. There are so many versions and iterations.”The Ramayana team had also attended San Diego Comic-Con for what was expected to be the global unveiling of the film’s trailer. However, just hours before its scheduled release at 8 AM on Friday, the launch was postponed.Announcing the decision on social media, producer Namit Malhotra wrote, “Today is a very special moment for our “Ramayana”, my dream of taking ramayana to the world is now a reality with our partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment. In light of the above we will be launching our trailer now globally at a later date. “In over 100 years of indian cinema this will become a moment of great pride where Ramayana will be shown to the entire world like any major global Hollywood film. This is special as it opens the door for people of the world to discover the richness of our culture and our stories with renewed pride and enthusiasm.”Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana is being released as a two-part cinematic saga. The first installment is slated to arrive in theatres this November. Alongside Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, the film features Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana.
