Ram Gopal Varma talks about ‘Dhurandhar’ success

Ram Gopal Varma weighs in on ‘Dhurandhar’s success, says ‘Pushpa’ and ‘KGF’ ‘created the shift but 'Dhurandhar' reversed it’

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is championing Aditya Dhar’s ‘Dhurandhar’, asserting it has revolutionized Indian storytelling and will challenge South Indian cinema’s dominance. Varma believes the film’s success, especially with the upcoming ‘Dhurandhar 2’, sets a new benchmark, potentially overshadowing traditional South Indian productions. He suggests this shift could redefine the industry’s future.

Ever since the release of ‘Dhurandhar’, Ram Gopal Varma has openly praised the film. Time and again in the past few months, he has praised Dhar’s filmmaking skills and cited that his film changed how storytelling will happen in the Indian film industry. In a new interview, the veteran director directly discussed South Indian cinema’s hold and addressed the delays of ‘Toxic’, ‘Dacoit’, and ‘Peddi’, connecting them to ‘Dhurandhar’s success.

Ram Gopal Varma says that ‘Dhurandhar’ will end South Indian cinema’s dominance

While talking to DNA about Aditya Dhar’s upcoming feature ‘Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge’, RGV shared how the first film managed to change the course of filmmaking in India. He further discussed the history of South Indian cinema, citing that Telugu and Tamil films mainly copied “Amitabh Bachchan’s films in the 70s and 80s.”

Ram Gopal Varma shares how ‘Dhurandhar’ has set a benchmark for the industry

In the 2000s, the slice of life genre became popular because of Hollywood films. However, mass-produced, larger-than-life films took over, citing names such as ‘KGF’, ‘Pushpa’, and ‘Baahubali.’ Commenting on Dhar’s feature in all of this, he said, “They created the shift. But I think ‘Dhurandhar’ reversed it.”Further adding, he shared, “Before Dhurandhar, there was no benchmark. Now it’s been set. And now with ‘Dhurandhar 2’, it will take it many notches higher.”

Ram Gopal Varma says that all South Indian films may go to toss

In another interview with Variety India, the director further commented about ‘Dhurandhar’ and its influence over South Indian cinema supremacy. Talking about the matter, he cited that since the first film was such a huge success, the second one may be even bigger than before. “You see, if ‘Dhurandhar 2’ creates numbers like Rs 1500 – 2000 crores, then all South Indian films will go for a toss, I think. All South Indian films are designed in the old-school manner,” he shared at the time.

About ‘Dhurandhar 2’

The second film in Aditya Dhar’s feature will pick up with Hamza taking over the regimen after Rehman Dakait’s death. However, this time around, Major Iqbal proves to be the next big problem as he continues to thwart their plans to cause harm to India. Go to Source
