Quote of the day by Chris Martin

Quote of the day by Chris Martin: 'Turn your magic on... Everything you want's a dream away. Under this pressure, under this weight, we are diamonds taking shape,' when the 'Fix You' hitmaker reflected on finding light after darkness

Chris Martin has always written from a place that is uncomfortably close to his actual life. The fans who have followed Coldplay across their career know this, because the shift between albums has never just been a change in sound. It has been a document. And nowhere is that more visible than in the journey from their sixth album to their seventh, from the grief-soaked quiet of ‘Ghost Stories’ in 2014 to the colour and movement of ‘A Head Full of Dreams’ in 2015, with ‘Adventure of a Lifetime’ arriving as its lead single on November 6, 2015, the first thing the world heard from the other side of a very public unravelling. The quote of the day reads: “Turn your magic on… Everything you want’s a dream away. Under this pressure, under this weight, we are diamonds taking shape.”These lines, co-written by Martin alongside his Coldplay bandmates Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland and Will Champion and sung by Martin himself, appear near the three-minute mark of ‘Adventure of a Lifetime’, right before the song’s final high-energy chorus, and they carry the full weight of where Martin had been before he could write them.

What is the meaning of Chris Martin’s quote? The diamond metaphor at the centre of this lyric is not a decorative choice. Diamonds are formed when carbon is subjected to extreme heat and pressure deep beneath the earth’s surface, and what emerges on the other side of that process is one of the hardest, most luminous materials in existence. Martin is applying that exact science to human experience. The pressure is not the problem. The pressure is the process. The weight is not something to escape. It is the very thing doing the shaping. The line “everything you want’s a dream away” is doing something slightly different. It is not a promise of ease. A dream away is not an arm’s length away, not a step away, not a certainty. It sits just at the edge of what is real, close enough to be reached for but not so close that it requires nothing. The lyric is asking for effort and belief together, not one without the other. And then “turn your magic on” is perhaps the most personal of the three. It is not addressed to a crowd. It reads like something someone said to Martin himself, at a moment when he had forgotten he had anything worth turning on.

Chris Martin and Coldplay: The story behind the songChris Martin was born on March 2, 1977, in Exeter, Devon, England. He is known as the lead vocalist, pianist and principal songwriter of Coldplay, one of the most commercially successful rock bands in history, with celebrated songs including ‘Yellow’, ‘The Scientist’, ‘Fix You’, ‘Clocks’, ‘Viva la Vida’ and ‘A Sky Full of Stars’ to his name, seven Grammy Awards to his shelf, and collaborations with Beyonce, Jay-Z, Rihanna and BTS across his career.

Early life of Chris Martin

Martin showed an early interest in music as a child, crediting his piano teacher for giving him his first real foundation. He attended Sherborne School in Dorset on a scholarship and it was there that his passion for songwriting began to take shape in earnest. He went on to study ancient world studies at University College London, where in 1996 he met guitarist Jonny Buckland on the very first day of term. The two began writing together almost immediately. Guy Berryman and Will Champion joined shortly after, and the four formed what would become Coldplay. The band signed to Parlophone Records and released their debut album ‘Parachute’ in 2000, which sold over eight million copies worldwide and announced Martin as one of the most distinctive songwriting voices of his generation. The records that followed, ‘A Rush of Blood to the Head’, ‘X&Y’, ‘Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends’ and ‘Mylo Xyloto’, each broke records, sold out stadiums and earned the band a place among the biggest acts in rock history.

Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow: The marriage and the album that came beforeMartin and Gwyneth Paltrow married in December 2003 after meeting backstage at one of his concerts in London the previous year. They had two children together: daughter Apple, born in May 2004, and son Moses, born in 2006. For a decade they were regarded as one of the more genuinely connected couples in the entertainment industry, two people who seemed to have found something real inside a world that makes real things very difficult to maintain. In March 2014, they announced their separation in a joint statement on Paltrow’s website, using the phrase “conscious uncoupling,” which became one of the most discussed pieces of celebrity language of that year. Martin later told the Sunday Times that despite how amicable the split appeared from the outside, he still woke up down a lot of days. He described the period as one where he was “depressed and overwhelmed,” according to NME. He told Rolling Stone that ‘A Head Full of Dreams’ was all about his road back from anxiety and heartbreak and called it, plainly, a hippie album. What he did in the immediate aftermath of the separation was reach for literature. He read Viktor Frankl’s ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’ and a 13th-century poem by the Persian poet Rumi called ‘The Guest House’, which he credited with changing his perspective entirely. He told Rolling Stone that the poem says everything that happens to you is okay, that the idea is to accept what comes and not run away from it, and to trust that things will eventually blossom and become colourful. That poem made it onto ‘A Head Full of Dreams’ as a spoken-word section.’Ghost Stories’, the album he made in the middle of all of this, was stripped back and deliberately quiet. Guitarist Jonny Buckland later described ‘A Head Full of Dreams’ as the night to the day by comparison. The band didn’t tour ‘Ghost Stories’. They went straight back into the studio. Martin described the darker record as something that emotionally cleared the decks, the pit stop that allowed them to understand where to go next.

Chris Martin and ‘Adventure of a Lifetime’,

Music website Idolator called ‘Adventure of a Lifetime’ the best Coldplay single in seven years when it was released. It was released on November 6, 2015 as the lead single from ‘A Head Full of Dreams’, Coldplay’s seventh studio album. The album went on to become one of the best-selling records of 2016, earning the band a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo or Group Performance for ‘Adventure of a Lifetime’ itself. The accompanying music video, which took six months to produce and features the entire band rendered as chimpanzees using motion-capture technology, became one of the most talked-about visuals of that year.
