‘Off Campus’ team talks about book adaptation

‘Off Campus’ has recently managed to go viral online, especially after it was revealed that Allie and Dean’s romance will be explored in the first season itself. The series, which has been adapted from the best-selling novels of Elle Kennedy. During a recent interview, Louisa Levy, who penned the script for the hit show, weighed in on the decision, along with what fans can expect from the next season.

Louisa Levy talks about ‘Off Campus’ and Allie-Dean storyline

While the main focus of the first season as well as the book remains to be on Hannah and Garrett, Allie and Dean’s introduction in episode caused quite a stir online. This was because their plot has an entirely separate book based on them, which the fans thought would be the same case for the series. While talking about the same to Variety, Louisa commented on that, and even addressed some of the scenes where Logan and Dean were shifted around as well. She stated that “I love that scene in the books, and I certainly would have loved to do the Dean version. But by changing it to Logan, it allowed us to play on his crush and support his story in a way that kiss doesn’t necessarily support Dean’s story this season. We launched Logan’s feelings in the pilot and this let us deepen that slow burn. It just made more narrative sense for where each character is going.”

Louisa Levy on how she approached the ‘Off Campus’ books

The star writer revealed that while she was aware, she did not entirely know just how popular ‘Off Campus’ was. She added that “I don’t think I was fully aware of just how popular they were — I keep discovering new things. It was really important to me to honor the fans and their favorite moments. We had eight episodes, so we did our best to bring those critical moments to screen.”Furthermore, she stated that an executive from the studio, Brianna Kaufman, was a “superfan”, and also the one who initially brought the book’s idea to the studios. She shared that Kaufman along with another producer of the show, were right by her side to ensure that she did not stray from the original plot too much.

Plot of ‘Off Campus’

The premise of the series is based on Elle Kennedy’s best-selling novels, and revolves around Hannah Wells, a music major who agrees to get into a fake relationship with hockey captain Garrett Graham in order to make her crush jealous.
