Malayalam director Nissar passes away at 65; leaves behind 24 films that redefined low-budget cinema; read more

Malayalam cinema has lost one of its most distinctive filmmakers. Director Nissar, known for crafting commercially successful films with modest budgets, passed away at the age of 65. A native of Thrikkodithanam Pulikkottupadi in Changanassery, he was the son of the late Abdul Khader.According to Madhyamam, Nissar had been undergoing treatment for liver and lung-related ailments before he breathed his last. Reportedly the funeral is scheduled to take place on August 20, Wednesday.

Directorial debut with ‘Sudhinam’

Nissar made his directorial debut with ‘Sudhinam’ (1994), starring Jayaram and Dileep. The film not only gave actress Madhavi a memorable role as an independent woman but also became a milestone in the careers of Dileep and Indrans. For Dileep, the movie is surely a pivotal one in his career.

Nissar gave opportunities for newcomers and mimicry artists

Throughout his career, Nissar displayed a sharp eye for talent. He gave opportunities to newcomers and mimicry artists, many of whom went on to become household names in Malayalam cinema. He has also collaborated with Vijayaraghavan in films such as ‘British Market’ and ‘Adukkala Rahasyam Angadipattu’.

the master of low-budget hits

Nissar carved a niche with his economic filmmaking style in an industry where high budget movies with star casts dominated. Reportedly, he minimized shooting days, worked with small budgets. He smartly utilized the star value of rising actors. This formula resulted in unexpected box-office successes, establishing him as a director who could create impact without extravagance.Some of the other works of Nissar include ‘Malayaalamaasam Chingam Onninu’, ‘Padanayakan’, ‘Captain’, ‘Auto Brothers’, ‘Dupe Dupe Dupe’, ‘Bullet’, and ‘Colours’.
