Maitreyi Ramakrishnan spills beans on Devi’s ultimate fate

What happened to Devi after ‘Never Have I Ever Finale’: Here’s what Maitreyi Ramakrishnan thinks

‘Never Have I Ever’ wrapped up its four-season run in 2023. With the Season 4 finale, the audience said goodbye to Devi Vishwakumar, whose messy, funny, and genuinely moving coming-of-age journey made the show a hit around the world. Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher gave us an Indian-American teenager with big dreams, sharp edges, and a whole lot of heart as she tried to figure out grief, identity, love, and friendship.Even though the show’s been over for a while, viewers still aren’t quite ready to let go of Devi and her friends. They want to know what happens next. That curiosity recently led to a pretty unexpected answer from Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, who played Devi.In a new interview, Maitreyi spilled the beans on Devi’s ultimate fate. Before we delve into what she said, let’s quickly recap how ‘Never Have I Ever’ ended.

‘Never Have I Ever’: How the series wrapped up

For the unversed, ‘Never Have I Ever’ dropped in 2020 and was almost instantly a fan favorite. Devi was the kind of main character you root for, even when she’s being a complete disaster. On one hand, she’s dealing with the loss of her dad and trying to keep up with her mom’s expectations; on the other hand, she’s juggling high school drama, friendships, and love triangles. Season four of the show followed Devi through her senior year at Sherman Oaks. She faced the usual mix of academic stress, complicated friendships, and, of course, her never-ending love triangle with Ben and Paxton. By the finale, Devi and Ben finally got honest with each other and became a couple. The show ends with them together in her Princeton dorm room, ready for a new chapter.

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan on how Devi’s story ends

That said, for Maitreyi, the real ending comes a little earlier. She’s said her favorite moment is when Devi kneels at her family altar to pray. It’s something Devi always does when she’s overwhelmed. In that final prayer, she’s grateful for her life and everyone in it. For Maitreyi, that’s where Devi truly grows up.Now, about that “dead in a ditch” comment. Maitreyi’s not just being dramatic; she told E! News that whenever people beg for a fifth season, she jokes that Devi is just gone. “Canonically, I tell people that Devi is dead in a ditch. She has followed in her father’s footsteps,” she laughed. But why so harsh? Honestly, she wants fans to stop clinging to the idea of more episodes. “Let’s grieve our girl and let her go,” she says. “It’s OK. She’s on her next reincarnation.” If the creators and the streaming giant ever asked her to do a season five? “It will be just me in a ditch. That’s season five, edited by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan,” she joked. As for Devi and Ben’s future together? Maitreyi doesn’t sugarcoat it. “Definitely, they’ve broken up. That was never gonna last. We all know this.”

What’s next for Maitreyi Ramakrishnan?

After ‘Never Have I Ever’ wrapped up, Maitreyi kept picking up new film and TV projects, stretching beyond teen comedies. In her next, ‘Slanted’, Maitreyi plays Bhindra, best friend to Joan Huang (Shirley Chen), a Chinese American student desperate to win the prom queen. Joan decides to undergo surgery at a strange clinic called Ethnos, which literally transforms her into a white girl (played by Mckenna Grace). When Joan comes back as Jo Hunt, blonde and blue-eyed, her friendship with Bhindra starts to fall apart.‘Slanted’ is scheduled for a theatrical release on March 13, 2026. Go to Source
