Madras High Court steps in to protect Happy Patel from piracy

Madras High Court passes order to safeguard Aamir Khan's production 'Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos' from piracy

The Madras High Court has stepped in to safeguard the release of the upcoming Hindi film ‘Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos’, ensuring that it reaches audiences as planned without the looming risk of piracy. The matter, titled Aamir Khan Productions vs BSNL, was moved by Aamir Khan Films, the banner headed by actor-producer Aamir Khan, after apprehensions were raised over the possibility of the film being illegally circulated online.According to a report by Bar and Bench, Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy passed an ad-interim injunction restraining any unauthorised broadcast or distribution of the film until further directions from the court. While issuing the order, the court observed that films are especially susceptible to leaks in the digital era and that any unauthorised release ahead of the official date could result in “irreversible injury” to the producers. However, the judge also recognised that such an injunction might impact the lawful commercial interests of certain respondents. To address this, the court directed the producer to furnish an indemnity in favour of those who may be affected by the order. ‘Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos’ is described as an offbeat spy comedy and marks the directorial debut of Vir Das, who also essays the lead role. He’s directed the film with Kavi Shastri. The film boasts an ensemble cast featuring Mona Singh and Imran Khan, who returns to the big screen after a prolonged break, along with Sharib Hashmi, Mithila Palkar, and Srushti Tawade in key supporting roles. The film is set to release on January 16, 2026.
