‘Landmark judgment’: Kumar Sanu thanks Delhi HC for protecting his personality rights, calls it a ‘significant victory’

Singer Kumar Sanu has achieved a major legal victory as the Delhi High Court protected his personality and publicity rights. The court ordered the removal of objectionable videos and content that misused his name, voice, likeness, and performances on social media.Sanu had approached the court seeking protection for his personality and publicity rights, including his name, image, voice, and distinctive singing style.As reported by PTI, Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora said a detailed interim injunction order would follow to protect the singer’s rights and remove the offending material.

Singer expresses gratitude to lawyer and the court

Following the court’s decision, Kumar Sanu shared his thanks on Instagram, posting a photo with his lawyer, Sana Raees Khan. He wrote, “I am deeply grateful to my advocate, Sana Raees Khan, for her powerful and masterful arguments that led to this significant victory in court. My heartfelt thanks to the Hon’ble Delhi High Court for recognizing and upholding my Personality Rights.”He further added, “This landmark judgment is not just a personal win, but a strong precedent in safeguarding every artist’s identity, voice, and creative expression.”

What was Kumar Sanu’s plea?

As per PTI, Kumar Sanu’s plea seeks to protect his personality and publicity rights, which include his name, voice, vocal style and technique, vocal arrangements and interpretations, mannerisms and manner of singing, images, caricatures, photographs, likeness, and signature. He also asked the court to prevent unauthorised or unlicensed use and commercial exploitation by third parties, which could cause confusion, deception, or damage his public image.During the hearing, the court noted that Sanu had complained about four profiles on Facebook and Instagram. Although the 334 URLs he provided were no longer active, Sanu raised concerns about GIFs, audio, and video recordings of his performances and voice. He stated that these caused him “unsavoury humour” and disrepute, violating his moral rights.
