Indian cinema’s most anticipated film, KH x RK, uniting Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, is reportedly eyeing a 2027 festival release, possibly during Dussehra or Diwali. Filming is slated to commence in August 2026, with Anirudh Ravichander composing music in a retro style. Rumours also suggest a potential cameo by Mammootty.
The upcoming film tentatively titled ‘KH x RK’ has already become one of the most talked-about projects in Indian cinema and the reason is pretty simply – the film will bring together two legendary superstars, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, on screen after a very long gap. According to the latest industry buzz, the makers are reportedly targeting a festival release window in 2027. However an official confirmation regarding the release date has not yet been made.
Festival release window in 2027
Reports suggest that the film could arrive in theatres during one of the major festival seasons. According to a report by 123 Telugu ‘KH x RK’ might release either during Dussehra or Diwali in 2027.The same report also indicates that the shoot is expected to begin sometime in August 2026 and if the schedule proceeds as planned, the production will likely take place over several months.
Anirudh Ravichander shares an update
Composer Anirudh Ravichander recently spoke about the project in a conversation with India Today. Talking about the timeline, Anirudh said, “I think probably next year, the film will go on floors, and there’s a lot of hype and hoopla around it.” He also shared details about his musical approach for the film. Anirudh revealed that he has previously composed energetic mass songs for both stars and this time he wanted to experiment with a different sound. The composer explained that he opted for a retro style to match the tone of the announcement promo and he also expressed happiness about the positive response to the promotional track ‘Aaja Raja’.
Shooting to begin after current projects
Reports indicate that both leading stars will begin filming only after finishing their current commitments. According to Filmibeat, the schedule depends heavily on their ongoing projects. Rajinikanth has already completed major work on Jailer 2, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. After the KH x RK promo shoot, he is reportedly taking a short break.If the current timeline remains unchanged, Rajinikanth is expected to start shooting for Thalaivar 173 in April 2026. Only after completing that film will the superstar move to KH x RK.Kamal Haasan also needs to wrap up his existing commitments before beginning work on the film. Because of these schedules the main shoot is expected to start either in late 2026 or early 2027.
Mammootty cameo rumours surface
Meanwhile, fresh industry rumours have added another layer of excitement. Reports suggest that Malayalam superstar Mammootty may appear in the film.If the reports are accurate, Mammootty could play a guest role as an old gangster friend of Kamal Haasan’s character.A post shared by the Twitter page Hey Opinions claimed, “Almost confirmed! #Mammootty will play a guest role in the #KHxRK movie as an old gangster friend of #KamalHaasan’s character.
