Imtiaz Ali on iconic Ranbir and Deepika unscripted scene in ‘Tamasha’

Imtiaz Ali on iconic Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone unscripted scene in 'Tamasha': 'I did not tell them, they just felt it'

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has shared an interesting behind-the-scenes story from the making of ‘Tamasha,’ which has a cult fan following. Years after the film’s release, fans continue to celebrate several emotional moments from the romantic drama starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. One such sequence set against the breathtaking landscapes of Corsica, remains among the most cherished scenes in the film. Interestingly, the moment was never planned as part of the screenplay. According to Imtiaz Ali, it emerged naturally during filming and eventually became part of the final cut. The filmmaker recently looked back at how the memorable sequence came together in an interview with Pinkvilla.

A location that inspired an unexpected scene in ‘Tamasha’

While filming in Corsica, the team came across a picturesque location that immediately caught Imtiaz Ali’s attention. However, reaching the spot was not part of the original plan.Explaining how the sequence originated, the director said, “That shot was not really planned in the film. It just happened like that. The place was there and we were not supposed to go up there because it was dangerous… and I went and climbed up there first to see yeh ho sakta hain kya (can it really happen)? When I reached there I called for Ranbir to come there immediately. The shot was only of him sitting there silently.” Initially, the director envisioned a simple visual of Ranbir Kapoor’s character quietly taking in the surroundings. The idea was minimalistic, relying on silence and atmosphere rather than dialogue. What happened next, however, transformed the scene completely.

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone added their own magic

According to Imtiaz, the sequence evolved organically once the actors arrived at the location. The director recalled, “Then I remember Ranbir saying, ‘Nahi sir main upar nahi chadunga (I will not climb there)!’ So I said yes no need to come here just come a little closer and he anyway came to that spot and sat over there. Then Deepika also came and told her just sit there. I did not even tell them anything, they just felt it. I just rolled the camera!” Without detailed instructions or rehearsals both actors simply responded to the mood of the moment.

Why the ‘Tamasha’ scene still connects with audiences?

One of the reasons ‘Tamasha’ continues to connect with audiences is its ability to capture emotions in a simple yet powerful manner. The Corsica sequence stands out because of its silence, natural performances and emotional honesty. ‘Tamasha’ followed the journey of Ved and Tara played by Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. Although the film received a moderate response during its initial theatrical run its reputation has grown significantly over the years.Meanwhile, Imtiaz Ali is preparing for the release of his upcoming directorial venture, ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’.
