How Mammootty convinced Indrans to buy a smartphone

How Mammootty convinced Indrans to buy a smartphone: 'Karuppu' actor reveals the truth behind viral online payment scene

Director RJ Balaji’s ‘Karuppu’ has taken the box office by storm, drawing massive crowds back to theatres with its perfect blend of raw emotion and storytelling. While the film features Tamil superstar Suriya in a powerhouse leading role, veteran actor Indrans, playing the character of Sukumaran, has completely stolen the spotlight. In particular, a beautifully nuanced scene involving a Google Pay notification has gone viral across social media. However, Indrans has shocked fans by revealing that his real-life interaction with technology is completely different from his viral on-screen persona.

The real life irony behind the viral Google Pay scene involving Indrans

In ‘Karuppu’, Indrans delivers one of the movie’s most notable moments when his character breaks down in tears while interacting over a Google Pay chat layout. The clip has been shared thousands of times on platforms like X (previously Twitter) and Instagram, praised as a masterclass in modern character acting.During an interview with Cine Ulagam, the seasoned actor confessed, “Even now, I don’t know how to use Google Pay. Honestly, I don’t. I bought a smartphone only recently.” He further admitted that he is still learning how to use many of the device’s features. His revelation has added a new layer of appreciation for his performance in the movie, as fans now see the scene in a completely different light.

How Indrans acquired a smartphone

During the same interaction, Indrans shared a delightful behind-the-scenes look into how a smartphone finally entered his life after years of resistance, crediting Malayalam cinema’s tech-savvy titan, Mammootty. For decades, Indrans famously preferred a low-tech lifestyle, refusing to carry a mobile device. Whenever production houses or directors needed to cast him, he would give them his son’s phone number, allowing his son to filter messages, manage dates, and relay instructions.Recalling the incident, Indrans said, “Once, Mammootty sir called me regarding something. He asked my son to hand over the phone to me and said, ‘If I want to tell you something confidential, can I tell it through him?’ He then asked why I never answered my own phone. That is how I ended up buying a smartphone. But even now, I don’t know how to use it properly.” Realizing the superstar had a point, Indrans eventually bought a smartphone, officially stepping into the digital era.

The veteran actor’s simplicity wins hearts once again

Despite owning a smartphone today, Indrans admitted that he still struggles to use many modern digital features, including online payment applications. His humble way of living and sincere confession have won the admiration of his fans through social media platforms. Fans have flooded social media to note that his lack of personal familiarity with apps probably made his on-screen curiosity and vulnerability look even more genuine. Go to Source
