House Targaryen bloodline explained: From Rhaenyra to Daenerys

House Targaryen bloodline explained: From Rhaenyra to Daenerys - here's all about fire, blood and destiny

House Targaryen rules with fire and blood, a dynasty marked by dragonriders, civil wars-and unyielding ambition across centuries. Rhaenyra Targaryen of ‘House of the Dragon’, Eggs of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’, to Daenerys Targaryen of ‘Game of Thrones’, the bloodline connects various elements of deceit, victory, and survival. The bloodline is the result of incestual relations because of the purity of Valyrian steel.

Rhaenyra: The dance of dragon queens

Rhaenyra Targaryen-portrayed by Emma D’Arcy, stands as King Viserys I’s, was named heir around 129 AC. Her claim sparks the Dance of the Dragons, a brutal civil war against uncle Aegon II. Married first to Laenor Velaryon, she bears sons Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey (rumored fathered by Harwin Strong). She later weds uncle Daemon Targaryen-birthing Aegon III, Viserys II, and Visenya (who dies young). Aegon III ascends, restoring the line through shaky peace.

Egg: The unlikely King Aegon V

Fast-forward to about 209 AC. Egg, real name Aegon Targaryen V, disguises himself as a bald stable boy while squiring for Ser Duncan the Tall in George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg. Fifth son of Prince Maekar, he rises to king after his siblings’ deaths. Aegon V, known as “the Unlikely,” fathers Jaehaerys II. His reign pushes reforms and ends with tragedy at Summerhall. Egg’s blood flows directly to later rulers-bridging prequels to the main series.

Daenerys: The last dragon’s heir

Born 284 AC as “Stormborn” on Dragonstone, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) descends from Aerys II “the Mad King” and Rhaella. Aerys, Jaehaerys II’s son, links back to Egg as his great-grandson. Daenerys hatches three dragons from—eggs possibly gifted to Rhaenyra’s kin, tying her to ancient magic. Exiled with brother Viserys after Robert’s Rebellion, she rises in Essos, claiming “Mother of Dragons”-and Iron Throne aspirations. Her arc echoes Rhaenyra’s queenly fire, centuries later.

Threads of fire

Rhaenyra’s son Aegon III sires Daeron I, whose line leads to Maekar (Egg’s father), then Jaehaerys II, Aerys II, and Daenerys. This chain survives Dance devastation, Blackfyre rebellions, and Robert’s coup. Targaryens intermarry fiercely, from Rhaenyra-Daemon to Aerys-Rhaella—fueling their volatile legacy. Go to Source
