'Homebound' OTT global release: When and where to watch India's Oscar 2026 contender starring Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor and Vishal Jethwa

‘Homebound’ is a 2025 drama about two childhood friends from a North Indian village who aspire to become police officers to gain dignity and escape social discrimination. The film explores friendship, hope, and systemic injustice amid caste pressures and the COVID-19 pandemic. It premiered at Cannes and streams on Netflix November 21.

‘Homebound’, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and produced by Dharma Productions, has become a celebrated film following its theatrical release on September 26, 2025. Starring Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor, the drama tells the poignant story of two childhood friends from a small North Indian village who aspire to become police officers to gain dignity and escape social discrimination.

India’s official Oscar entry

The film, the internationally acclaimed film that secured India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards, is soon making its streaming debut. It will be available for streaming on Netflix starting November 21, 2025. Audiences eager to watch this critically praised drama can catch its digital premiere on that date.

Story of friendship and resilience

‘Homebound’ tells the story of two childhood friends, Mohammad Shoaib Ali and Chandan Kumar, who come from a small village in North India and share the dream of becoming police officers to earn dignity and improve their lives. Their bond is tested as they face societal pressures, caste and religious discrimination, and the harsh realities of poverty. Set during the COVID-19 pandemic, the film follows their emotional journey as they navigate personal struggles, exam results, and the grueling trek back home amid lockdowns. Through their highs and lows, the film captures themes of friendship, hope, and resilience in the face of systemic injustice.

Acclaimed film festival presence

It had a notable presence in the international film festival circuit in 2025. After its world premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in May, where it received a lengthy standing ovation, ‘Homebound’ was featured as the closing film at the Melbourne International Film Festival in August. It also earned a spot in the Gala Presentation section of the Toronto International Film Festival in September, further cementing its status as one of the most acclaimed Indian films of the year.
