Here’s when and where will Bharathiraja’s final rites be held

Exclusive: Here's when and where will Bharathiraja's final rites be held; Tamil film industry cancels all shoots on June 11

The Tamil film fraternity is gearing up to say a poignant goodbye to the great movie director Bharathiraja, who breathed his last on June 10, 2026, owing to age-related illnesses. The last rituals of the deceased director have been scheduled in his hometown of Neelankarai, Chennai, with many film personalities and his admirers mourning his loss. His death leaves a huge void in the Tamil film industry.

Bharathiraja to be cremated with state honours in Theni

The Tamil Nadu government has announced that Bharathiraja’s final rites will be conducted with full state honours. According to arrangements made by the family and authorities, his mortal remains will be taken to his native district, Theni, after the public homage in Chennai. A PRO closely associated with Bharathiraja’s family revealed to Etimes that the cremation is scheduled for June 11 at around 3 PM at his farmhouse near Vathalakundu in Theni district. Family members, close friends, film industry colleagues, and thousands of admirers are expected to attend the final ceremony and pay their respects to the filmmaker who brought rural Tamil Nadu to life on screen.

The Tamil film industry observes a day of mourning

As a mark of respect to Bharathiraja, the Tamil film industry has decided to pause all shooting activities for a day. The Tamil Film Producers Council announced that all film and television serial shootings will remain suspended on June 11 from 6 AM to 6 PM. The decision was taken to honour Bharathiraja’s contribution to cinema and allow industry members to participate in the final farewell. This decision shows the respect the filmmaker earned during his life and successful career.

Should more film industries implement a day of mourning for impactful figures?

An End to an era that shaped Tamil cinema

With movies like ‘16 Vayathinile’, ‘Kizhakke Pogum Rail’, ‘Pasumpon’, ‘Alaigal Oivathillai’ and ‘Mudhal Mariyadhai’, the director changed the face of Tamil cinema over the last four decades. He brought new talent to the industry, created iconic characters that still live on, and told real stories of villages on screen. Right up until his final years, he continued to work as an actor and mentor. The state recognizing him with awards, the final send-off in his native land, and the industry taking a day off reflect his magnificent legacy in his last journey. Go to Source
