Gwyneth Paltrow has always spoken her mind on fashion. The 53-year-old Oscar winner and lifestyle mogul took a playful yet pointed swipe at the “costume culture” increasingly dominating the Met Gala. Reflecting on the evolution of red carpet style, Paltrow drew a firm line between artistic expression and viral gimmicks. Her comments notably targeted the trend of literal interpretations of Gala themes—reminiscent of Katy Perry’s famous hamburger and chandelier outfits.

Gwyneth Paltrow on Met Gala costumes

According to Page Six, Paltrow drew a firm line between high fashion and over-the-top theatrics, insisting she would stick to timeless dresses regardless of the theme. Paltrow laid it out plainly in her Goop blog post about favorite looks. She said, “I’m so never going the Met in like hot dog or whatever, you know I have to myself, and foremost, I’m not going in a costume. I’m going in a dress.” The remark targets wild interpretations like food-themed outfits. Paltrow emphasized personal authenticity above all. Paltrow wants attire that reflects her style first, not forced extravagance for viral moments. This stance revives her 2013 comments on the Kyle and Jackie O Show. There, she called the Met Gala “so un-fun” and vowed, “I’m never going again,” citing overwhelming crowds. Despite her words, Paltrow returned to the Met Gala. In 2019, for the “Camp: Notes on Fashion” theme, she wore a flowing yellow Chloe gown that blended whimsy with poise. Her 2017 look stayed sleek and modern. Both choices reflected her preference for grace over gimmicks. She highlighted an ice blue Prada top from a past gala as a favorite. Originally paired with a big skirt, it captured her mix of bold and refined.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s recent standout looks

At the 2026 SAG Actor Awards on March 1, Paltrow stunned in a plunging black sequined Givenchy gown. The lace drop-waist design honored old Hollywood glamour. She turned heads at Valentino’s Winter 2026 show in Rome too. A green minidress, white tights, and blue heels showed her playful polish. These appearances promote “Marty Supreme,” her project with Timothee Chalamet and Odessa A’zion.

Gwyneth Paltrow on work front

Gwyneth Paltrow stars in ‘Marty Supreme’, directed by Josh Safdie, a 1950s sports comedy-drama about table-tennis hustler Marty Mauser, played by Timothée Chalamet. Paltrow portrays fading movie star Kay Stone, whose life intertwines with Marty’s ambitions. The film premiered at the New York Film Festival in October 2025 and released in U.S. theaters on December 25, 2025. Garnering critical acclaim, Marty Supreme is an Oscar contender, earning multiple nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Chalamet, marking a strong awards-season presence.
