Gulshan on Janhvi being trolled over ‘didn’t vibe’ remark

Gulshan Devaiah on Janhvi Kapoor being trolled over his 'didn't vibe' remark, 'Sometimes, you have to work with people who are terrible'

Gulshan Devaiah, who shared screen space with Janhvi Kapoor in Ulajh, has clarified his earlier remark about not “vibing” with her during the film’s shoot. The actor said his statement was blown out of proportion, which led to Janhvi facing a wave of online trolling. In a recent interview with News18, Gulshan reflected on the controversy, explaining that his intention was misunderstood. “People trolled her, but what I meant was that you don’t necessarily have to vibe with the people you work with,” he said, adding that professionalism should always take precedence over personal chemistry. He noted that it’s unrealistic to expect to get along with everyone on set. “If I want to work only with people I vibe with, that’s fine too, but that’s not why I’m an actor,” he said.

‘Her PR team was sweating, but she was cool about it’

Gulshan revealed that while Janhvi handled the situation with remarkable calm, her PR team seemed tense. “She got a lot of trolling, and I saw her PR team sweating after that. Every time we’re together, they stand behind the camera, pacing, thinking, ‘I don’t know what this guy will say next,’” he said with a laugh, adding that his sense of humour often confuses people during promotions. The actor even apologised to Janhvi for the misunderstanding, and she was quick to accept it. He shared, “I told her I was sorry, that it was just my humour. She was totally chill. I think I still have that message… or maybe I deleted it. She sent a long, sweet voice note saying she understood. She’s actually quite reserved and keeps to herself.”

‘Sometimes you have to work with people you don’t vibe with’

Reflecting on his long career, Gulshan admitted that not every co-actor is easy to connect with. “Sometimes, you have to work with people you don’t vibe with. Sometimes, you have to work with people who are terrible. I’ve done that,” he said, candidly adding that even senior actors can be difficult at times. He recalled a tough experience working with late veteran actor Tom Alter. “He was such a kind man, but very difficult to work with at the time. We didn’t know he was battling cancer. I even told him once that we respected him and didn’t mean to upstage him. Later, I found out he was sick and never told anyone. It broke my heart,” Gulshan shared.
