Farah Khan was advised to reduce one baby when she concieved triplets via IVF: 'The doctor said it was risky'

Choreographer turned filmmaker Farah Khan married Shirish Kunder and they have three children. Farah had made news for giving birth to triplets and she was one of the people who openly spoke about undergoing IVF at a time when people still did not talk about it. Farah gave birth to her triplets in 2008. In an earlier interview, the director had reflected upon the struggles that she went through during the process. The doctor had even advised her to reduce one baby as it was risky. While speaking to Nova IVF Fertility, Farah revealed that she leaned heavily on manifestation techniques and began reading this book, ‘The Secret’ during her attempts to conceive, hoping it would help turn things around after repeated difficulties. According to Farah, she and Shirish had even picked out baby names long before they discovered they were expecting more than one child.

She shared, “Me and Shirish started talking about kids and what we want to name them and how they will be and all that.” The moment the doctor called with her results, Farah sensed good news was coming. She recalled the doctor cautioning her, “Listen, Farah, don’t jump too high, I want you to be calm, you are pregnant but don’t get your hopes up but it is multiple pregnancies.” Farah went on to describe the startling moment she learned she was carrying three babies and the tough medical recommendation she received because of her age at the time. Advised to “reduce” one fetus to avoid complications, Farah chose instead to continue with all three pregnancies, ultimately welcoming Czar, Anya and Diva in 2008.She remembered the phone call clearly. “At ten days she (the doctor) called me and she said that it’s triplets, and I said, ‘Haan, I just knew it doc’. Of course we were too excited and the doctor gave us a reality check and said that we’d have to reduce one because normally most twins start out as triplets. She said that you’re going to be 43 when the children come and it’s not good for you. Your stomach is great, your lining is fab but three children is a big risk and one child can be really small,” Farah said.Speaking about the light-hearted humour at home, Farah mentioned how her kids now tease her about that difficult medical advice. She revealed, “The doctor gave me the worst case scenario, but I was like, ‘Doctor, you tell me what you need, how big you want each child to be.’ So she said that safely they should be two kilos each. I said I’ll make sure that they are over and above that. You will not believe my kids were two and a half kilos each. So, I was literally carrying seven and a half kilos and roaming. I was like I am not going to reduce one child, and now my children have games like, ‘You should have reduced that one, the doctor told you you should have removed one child.'”
