‘Doctor Who’ fans had been looking forward to the beloved show returning for a massive Christmas special; however, there seems to have been a change of plans. The latest reports have cited that the creators of the show seem to have officially cancelled the ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas special. Not only that, but a longtime showrunner has also announced his exit from the show, leaving fans in shock.

‘Doctor Who’ Christmas special called off

Last year, the production company behind the beloved series announced and confirmed that there would be a Christmas special, which left fans rejoicing. However, as per the latest reports by the BBC, it has been confirmed that there will be no Christmas special.Not only that, but the production company is putting out a brand new tender to production houses to work on creating the next season of the series. The news comes along with Russell T Davies announcing his exit from the show.

Russell T Davies announces departure from ‘Doctor Who’

Russell T Davies has been linked with one of the longest-running series for around 8 years now. He worked on the revival of the series and was there for two eras of the show. He first worked on ‘Doctor Who’ from 2005 to 2010, and again joined the series in 2023, up until his last season, which aired last year.Taking to a social media account recently, the famed showrunner announced that he will no longer be returning to the series for any upcoming projects. He posted a drawn photo of the iconic phone booth from the ‘Doctor Who’ series and bid goodbye to the show that he had been part of for around eight years.He started his post by saying, “And so GOODBYE from me to Doctor Who but HELLO to a big new future for the show, as the BBC announces it’s putting the show out to tender. As a result, there won’t be a Christmas Special.” He further added that they had created the Christmas special at a time when they knew what was going to happen; however, things have changed.Further on, he added in his post that, “You’ll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who… but you’ll be waiting for MORE Doctor Who than a one-off. So it’s worth it!” , also sharing that been taken to start the creation of the here and special episode.Concluding his post, Davies expressed his excitement over the future of the ‘Doctor Who’ series and cited that he cannot wait, along with the fans, to see what will come.He shared, “Now I’m as excited as anyone to see what comes next! Will they keep the theme tune? Will they lose the blue box? Will they bring back the Drahvin?! It’s all up for grabs, which is so Doctor Who- exciting, unpredictable, and new! Here comes the future, vworp vworp.”
