Director Nolan recalls Chalamet’s instinct in ‘Interstellar’

Christopher Nolan told Timothée Chalamet he ignored direction on ‘Interstellar’ scene

At a recent film festival, Christopher Nolan took a moment to celebrate Timothée Chalamet’s unique creativity while filming ‘Interstellar.’ He recounted how Chalamet, as a newcomer, confidently engaged in a crucial scene, embracing his instincts despite Nolan’s differing opinion.

Christopher Nolan offered a candid memory about working with Timothée Chalamet on ‘Interstellar,’ recalling a moment when the young actor trusted his instincts. The exchange came during a reunion screening in Los Angeles, where the pair revisited the space epic and reflected on its journey from mixed reactions to lasting emotional impact.

Christopher Nolan on ‘Interstellar’ scene

As reported by Variety, the American Cinematheque presented the event at the AMC Universal CityWalk as part of a career retrospective. In a video shared by the Nolan Archives, Chalamet called the film his favorite project. “Though my role is not enormous in ‘Interstellar,’ I think I was number 12 on the call sheet, this film came to me at a time in life, in my career, where things were certainly not set yet,” he said. “And it’s remained my favorite project I’ve ever been in.”Chalamet reminded the crowd that the script began as a project involving Steven Spielberg. “When I got the part, I googled the project. The original story was about a father and his son, so I thought, ‘Oh man, I made it!’” he said, before noting that later drafts reduced the size of Tom’s role. Nolan jumped in with a smile. “Never believe what you read online!”

Timothée Chalamet defies direction

Talk then turned to the famous sequence in which Cooper watches messages from home. Nolan admitted he questioned one of Chalamet’s choices at the time. “When you were filming the messages from home, there was a particular thing where you were hitting a dark tone,” he said. “It felt too much for me. I didn’t particularly like it.”What happened next impressed him. “I told you about it and you went ahead and did whatever the f**k you wanted and carried on,” Nolan continued. He added that the actor had mapped out his approach and wanted to stand by it rather than change direction casually. “You had planned what you wanted to do. You planned your choices and you didn’t want to abandon that on a casual whim for me.” For Nolan, the moment showed confidence, not defiance. And in the years since, the film has only grown in stature.
