‘Dhurandhar’ actor Danish Pandor on joining Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’

Danish Pandor on joining Imtiaz Ali’s 'Main Vaapas Aaunga': 'I had auditioned for this role just before the release of 'Dhurandhar'

As Imtiaz Ali’s much-awaited period romance ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ gears up for its theatrical release, actor Danish Pandor has shared insights into how he became a part of the project. Interestingly, the actor revealed that his association with the film began much earlier than many might assume. According to Pandor, he auditioned for the role before ‘Dhurandhar’ was released and had even completed shooting his portions by the time the film reached audiences. In a conversation with Variety India, the actor shared, “I had auditioned for this role just before the release of ‘Dhurandhar,’ and interestingly, I had already shot for it before its release. It all happened at the right time, and I’m really glad it did. It was quite a memorable experience.” While the actor chose not to reveal specific details about his role, he hinted that his character plays an important part in the narrative despite appearing for a limited duration.Danish described it as a special appearance but stressed that the role carries significant weight within the story. “It’s a special appearance, but it’s a character that’s quite significant and impactful to the story. I genuinely can’t reveal much at this point because that would take away the surprise. I’d rather let the audience experience it for themselves when they watch the film in theatres on June 12.” The film features Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, Vedang Raina, and Naseeruddin Shah in key roles, with music composed by A.R. Rahman.

Danish Pandor on working with Imtiaz Ali

For Pandor, one of the biggest highlights of the project was the opportunity to collaborate with filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, whose body of work has inspired countless aspiring actors. Reflecting on the experience, the actor spoke about Ali’s ability to balance creative freedom with precise storytelling.“Working with Imtiaz Sir has been an absolute privilege. You grow up watching his films and hoping that one day you’ll get to work with a filmmaker like him, so when it actually happens, it’s surreal. He’s incredibly humble, warm and knows exactly what he wants. But at the same time, he gives actors the freedom to explore. Even the smallest tweak he suggests can completely transform a scene and make it feel fresh.”Pandor further added that sharing screen space with a talented ensemble cast under Ali’s direction made the experience even more memorable.

More about ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’

When asked what drew him towards ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’, Pandor pointed to the screenplay and the way every character contributes meaningfully to the larger narrative.“What excites me the most is the story and the way the characters are written. Every character has a purpose and leaves an impression. It’s one of those films where the emotional journey stays with you long after it’s over, and that’s something I really connected with.”The actor also revealed that the role allowed him to step away from familiar territory and experiment with something different. “It’s definitely different from the kind of roles I’ve played. I enjoy challenging myself with every project, and this character gave me the chance to explore a completely different space. Even though it’s a special appearance, it carries a lot of weight, and that’s what drew me towards it.”With ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ set against the backdrop of Partition and featuring an ensemble cast led by Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, Vedang Raina, and Naseeruddin Shah, audiences will soon discover the mystery behind the character Danish Pandor has been carefully keeping under wraps.
