Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling have been praised for their natural chemistry on screen, becoming one of the fan-favourite pairs. As their iconic romantic-comedy ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ celebrates its 15th anniversary, director Glenn Ficarra recalled how they instantly impressed the makers during casting for the roles. The 37-year-old Academy Award-winning actress stood out from the crowd for being unfazed by Gosling’s presence in the room – and everything perfectly aligned. Here’s a closer look at Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling becoming the adorable on-screen couple.

Glenn Ficarra revealed how Emma Stone teased Ryan Gosling

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa were auditioning multiple actresses to find someone who could portray Hannah Weaver. “So we put her together with Ryan [Gosling]. We did this whole day of actresses reading with Ryan, and a lot of them were really good. But then, once Ryan stepped into the room, they sort of were a little shaken,” Ficarra recalled during an interview with PEOPLE, before adding how it was difficult for Emma Stone to audition for the role due to location differences. As for Ryan Gosling, he was trying to be himself and ‘wasn’t trying to do anything.’ During the reading with Stone, the 45-year-old Canadian actor fumbled a line. “Emma just, without missing a beat, was like, ‘Oh, you’re killing this. You’re doing great,’” the director remembered and laughed. “She just flipped him the s**t right then and there, and we were all just like, ‘Okay, that’s it. That’s the person.’ And we wanted to work with her desperately. Even in the small stuff she was doing, she’s so brilliant,” Ficarra revealed the event that led to the legendary pair.
