More about ‘Batwara 1947’

‘Batwara 1947’ is based on a Mohajir family that crosses over to Lahore and occupies an abandoned Hindu home after the Partition. Based on acclaimed playwright Asghar Wajahat’s play ‘Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai’, the story focuses on an elderly Hindu woman who refuses to leave the house and the tensions that arise between her and the Mohajir family. The film celebrates the bond between two families while exploring hope amid one of the darkest chapters of human history. The project marks the first collaboration between Sunny Deol, director Rajkumar Santoshi, and producer Aamir Khan. Aamir said in a statement, “This was one of the favourite scripts of Dharamji, and I am so glad he could see the film.”

The film also marks the reunion of the hit 90s actor-director duo of Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi, known for iconic films like ‘Ghatak’, ‘Ghayal’, and ‘Damini’. Speaking about the long journey of the project, Sunny said, “Lahore ek aisa subject hai jispe hum kaafi saalon se kaam kar rahe the; kayi actron ne kahaani suni hai. Kayi actor ke saath banne wala bhi tha, lekin bana nahi (Lahore is a subject we’ve been working on for many years. Several actors have heard the story. It was even close to being made with a few actors, but it ultimately didn’t happen). Then again, ‘Gadar 2’ has made everything happen.”
