Ayushmann Khurrana says, ‘Maine saare taboo topics khatam’

Ayushmann Khurrana says he's focusing only on family entertainers now: 'Saare taboo topics khatam kar diye hain'

Ayushmann Khurrana built much of his career on bold, taboo-breaking subjects, but the actor says that chapter may now be behind him. In a candid conversation, Ayushmann has opened up about why he is pivoting towards more relatable, family-friendly films and how the post-pandemic box office reality shaped this decision.

Ayushmann Khurrana says there are no taboo topics left to work on

From sperm donation in his debut ‘Vicky Donor’ (2012) to erectile dysfunction in ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’ (2017), Ayushmann made taboo subjects his signature. But speaking on The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra, the actor was clear that he has nothing more to offer as of now on that path. When asked which taboo subject he would want to explore next, Ayushmann said, “I think maine saare taboo topics khatam kar diye hain (laughs). I have worked in so many films based on them. It limits the family audience. I did films on taboo subjects before the Covid pandemic. Even after that, I did ‘Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui’ and ‘Doctor G’, which didn’t get as much at the box office as I hoped for.”Ayushmann acknowledged that the pandemic marked a turning point, both for Bollywood and for his own choices as an actor. He added, “After OTT became big, I only looked for films that were for wider audiences. Taboo break se zyaada (more than breaking taboos), relatable subjects that people can watch together. Everything was so different before the pandemic; the films I did had tremendous box office uproar. But things changed post-pandemic.”

Ayushmann Khurrana’s projects

Ayushmann Khurrana’s latest release, ‘Pati Patni Aur Woh 2’, hit cinemas on Friday to an average opening day at the box office. Directed by Mudassar Aziz, the movie also features Sara Ali Khan, Rakul Preet Singh, and Wamiqa Gabbi.Next, Ayushmann Khurrana has ‘Yeh Prem Mol Liya’ and ‘Udta Teer’ in the pipeline.
