Asha Bhosle faced domestic abuse, asked to leave during pregnancy

Asha Bhosle faced domestic abuse in her first marriage, was asked to leave while pregnant for the third time: 'Have no ill will'

Asha Bhosle celebrates her birthday today. The legendary singer has turned 92 but her energy aur child-like aura completely belies her age. She continues to have the same enthusiasm and zest. She continues to work still and while she’s filled with positivity, Bhosle has not seen an easy life. The singer got married for the first time when she was 16. Her husband was 31-year old Ganpatrao Bhosle. It was a love marriage against her family’s wish. Infact, she had even confessed that when she got married at such a young age, sister Lata Mangeshkar did not speak to her for a long time. It was only after the birth of her second son, Hemant that the entire Mangeshkar family accepted them. But the singer had once spoken about this first marriage where she faced a lot of trauma and even domestic abuse. Ganpatrao was not in the favour of the singer getting close to her family, especially her sister Lata. He even accused her of infidelity. After many fights, when Asha Bhosle was pregnant with her third child, she was asked to leave the house. In an old interview with Kavita Chhiber, Asha Bhosle had said, “I did get married at a very young age to a man who was 20 years older than I was. It was a love marriage and Lata didi did not speak to me for a long time. She disapproved of the alliance. The family was very conservative, and they could not handle a singing star for a daughter-in-law.”However, she did not hold any grudges against him. She said, “There was abuse and ill-treatment, and I finally was asked to leave when I was expecting my youngest son Anand, and I did go back to my mother, sisters, and brother. I do not blame anyone and have no ill will. I feel if I had not met Mr Bhosle, I would not have had these three amazing children and life turned out okay.”Asha Bhosle later got married to RD Burman in 1980. It was a second marriage for both of them. As per reports, he kept pursuing her and finally won over her, thus she agreed on marrying him. After a few years, they started living separately and the reason for that is said to be his lifestyle. However, they continued to have love and mutual admiration for each other, till he passed away in 1994.
