Anurag says Ranbir has nailed it as Lord Rama in Ramayana

Anurag Basu says Ranbir Kapoor has 'amazingly nailed it' as Lord Rama in 'Ramayana': 'You need a lot of courage'

Ranbir’s ‘Ramayana’ glimpse on Hanuman Jayanti divided social media. Director Anurag Basu hails it as “amazingly nailed,” calling it courageous. Cast: Sai Pallavi (Sita), Yash (Ravana). Part 1 releases Oct 2026. Basu eyes Ranbir-Emraan reunion.

The highly awaited ‘Ramayana’s first teaser featuring Ranbir Kapoor’s first look as Lord Rama, was unveiled earlier this month on Hanuman Jayanti. Social media buzzed with divided opinions on Ranbir as Lord Rama. Yet, director Anurag Basu, known for past hits like ‘Barfi!’ and ‘Jagga Jasoos’ with the star, praises how Kapoor has “amazingly nailed the look.”

Anurag Basu on Ranbir Kapoor as Rama

Talking to Variety India, Anurag Basu said, “The way I had imagined Ranbir as Rama when he signed the film, and what I expected was very good. I expected that this is how Ranbir would look, as he loves challenges. It was very tough, and you need a lot of courage to get into that character to play Ram”.He hails the actor’s choice as a bold step, adding, “It takes a lot of courage for an actor to say yes. Because people put actors in boxes in our industry. So, I think it is very courageous of him. And from whatever I’ve seen of the film and the images, he has amazingly nailed it. I’m looking forward to it.”

Ranbir Kapoor and Emraan Hashmi reunion hopes

Queried on potentially teaming up again with longtime collaborators Ranbir and Emraan Hashmi, the director gushes, “I love working with Emraan and Ranbir. They are great actors. Everybody knows that. But they are also great people. And that has become very rare in today’s time and today’s generation of actors. So, I will try to work with them again,” the filmmaker concludes.

Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Ramayana’ cast and release

In Ramayana, Ranbir stars as Lord Rama alongside Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, with music by Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman; recent teasers in New York and LA have sparked buzz for its grand scale, while the ‘Rama Glimpse’ first look on Hanuman Jayanti drew mixed social media reactions. Part 1 of ‘Ramayana’ is set for theatrical release in October 2026, with Part 2 following in 2027. Go to Source
