Andy Muschietti teases 1935 setting for ‘Welcome to Derry’ Season 2

‘Welcome to Derry’ Season 2 creator Andy Muschietti confirms 1935 time jump, Bradley Gang plot: 'There’s no suburban comfort'

Brace yourself for an eerie journey as ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ Season 2 takes a chilling turn back to 1935. Visionary director Andy Muschietti has announced that this next installment will excavate the town’s haunting heritage, spotlighting the ruthless escapades of the ill-fated Bradley Gang amid the despair of the Great Depression.

‘It: Welcome to Derry’ creator Andy Muschietti has shared a major update on Season 2, confirming that work is now underway on the next chapter of the HBO Max horror series. After Season 1 wrapped in December, Muschietti revealed that the story will move to 1935 and explore a darker period in Derry’s past. The new season will focus on the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers whose stop in Derry leads to a violent event tied to the town’s evil history.

‘It: Welcome to Derry’ Season 2 is now in development

Speaking to Deadline, Muschietti said the team is already working on Season 2 and enjoying the new setting. “It’s 1935 – we’re now working on it, and it’s so much fun. For the ones of you who read the books, probably the Bradley Gang sounds familiar. The Bradley Gang was a gang of bank robbers that — not accidentally, but they were on their way somewhere and they stopped in Derry to buy some ammo and something horrible happens,” he said.Muschietti also explained the real-life link behind the story. “The Bradley Gang is based on the Brady Gang, which is a real-life gang of robbers that were executed in the streets of Bangor, Maine. And now we’re not creating the event that the big paroxysm of violence in this case will be the massacre of a Bradley gang,” he said. The creator said the next season will show Derry during the Depression Era, which changes the world of the series in a big way. “It’s fascinating because the thing that is so much fun in this stage of development is that we’re facing an era which is the Depression Era that changes dramatically the setup of things,” he said.

Andy Muschietti teases Pennywise and Season 3

Muschietti added that the setting will move away from the familiar image of children living in suburbia. “There’s no suburban comfort — the trope of the kids that live in suburbia and they ride their bikes and suddenly one of them disappears is nothing like this. This is in 1935. It’s a very dire situation. People are very poor. They’re struggling to survive, so the setup will be very different.”Muschietti also pointed to the larger plan for the series. “There’s like three big events in Welcome to Derry Season 1 … and Season 3 would be the explosion of the Kitchener Iron Works, which is a big explosion during an Easter egg hunt where a hundred kids lost their lives.”When asked what he can reveal right now about the demonic clown’s role, Muschietti kept it brief but clear: “It’s always there f*cking around, so that much I can tell you.” The comment hints that the force behind Pennywise will remain central as the show moves through Derry’s past.
