‘Seinfeld’ director Tom Cherones passes away at age 86 - Report

The entertainment world mourns the loss of Tom Cherones, a revered director whose genius brought ‘Seinfeld’ to life, passing away peacefully at 86 in Oregon. Cherones directed 81 episodes over the show’s first five landmark seasons, cementing his legacy in comedy history. Beyond ‘Seinfeld’, his impressive resume included significant contributions to ‘General Hospital’ and ‘Growing Pains’.

Tom Cherones, who was best known for his stint as the director of the hit comedy show ‘Seinfeld’, has passed away at the age of 86. The director had been dealing with alzheimers for quite some time and passed away in his home in Florence, Oregon.The Hollywood Reporter shared the news after a family spokesperson confirmed his passing. He passed away in his home on January 5, 2026.

All about Tom Cherones

Tom Cherones was born on September 11, 1939, in a small town in Alabama. He completed his education and got a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of New Mexico. Later, he got a master’s degree in telecommunications from the University of Alabama. After serving in the Navy for four years, Cherones returned to civilian life.His journey into the entertainment industry began with ‘General Hospital’ in 1975, when he landed the role of a production manager. His first big gig in the TV industry came with ‘My Sister Sam’ in 1980. While Cherones worked on a multitude of projects over the years, his most beloved work came from ‘Seinfeld.’ He is credited as the director of 81 out of the 86 shows in the first five seasons of the TV shows. His work is still remembered by many, and most of the episodes that he worked on are considered to be highlights. On ‘Seinfeld’, Cherones appeared in front of the screen for one episode titled ‘The Pilot’ in season 4. He appeared in a cameo role as a fictional director. During his brief appearance, he said the lines, “Gonna rip that little guy [Jason Alexander’s George Costanza] a new one.”Some of his other works include, but are not limited to, ‘Growing Pains’, ‘Desperate Housewives’, ‘Berrenger’s’, ‘Annie McGuire’, ‘Boston Common’, ‘Men Behaving Badly’, ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’, ‘Ladies Man’, ‘The Pitts’, ‘Reaper ’, and many others. He is survived by his children, Susan and Scott, as well as his third wife, Carol E. Richards.
