Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said that although former prime minister Indira Gandhi gave the slogan ‘Garibi Hatao,’ it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who turned that promise into reality through concrete action on the ground.
In an exclusive interview with Network18 Group Editor-in-Chief Rahul Joshi, Shah said that when it comes to achievements, PM Modi stands apart from India’s longest-serving prime ministers, including Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.
“In terms of achievements, Modi ji stands out. He has translated slogans like “Garibi Hatao” into actual ground reality. In just 11 years, 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty. Over 60 crore lives have been touched—by giving homes, toilets, gas cylinders, electricity, 5 kg of food grains, Rs 5 lakh medical insurance, and tap water,” said Shah.
Over the past 11 years, Shah said every dimension of life in India has seen significant progress.
“The armed forces are being modernised. The ‘Make in India’ dream is now a reality. And India’s economy has risen from 11th to 4th largest in the world,” said the minister.
Looking ahead to 2047, he said PM Modi has ignited a national vision for ‘Viksit Bharat’ and today, 140 crore Indians are united in that belief.
“These are unprecedented achievements. Of course, everyone has their own contributions—Nehru and Indira Gandhi included. But in terms of transformational impact across sectors, no one has done more in such a short span than Modi ji,” added Shah.
