‘World of 2025, not 1945’: UN chief backs UNSC reform, India a strong seat contender

India has consistently pushed for permanent membership in an expanded United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Last year, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told Parliament that India “accords the highest priority” to this objective

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is optimistic about reforming the Security Council, with India emerging as a “pivotal voice in the multilateral system”, the agency’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.

“The secretary general is very supportive of the reform of the security council to make it more representative of the world of 2025, as opposed to the world of 1945,” he told ANI on the sidelines of the ongoing UN General Assembly session.

India has consistently pushed for permanent membership in an expanded United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Last year, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told Parliament that India “accords the highest priority” to this objective. In a written response in the Rajya Sabha, he stated, “India strongly believes that it has all the credentials to be a permanent member of a reformed and expanded UNSC that reflects contemporary global realities.”

Dujarric also highlighted New Delhi’s contributions to the UN, saying, “India is a very important part of the UN system. They are a great supporter of multilateralism. The secretary general has very good relations with the Indian government. We have a lot of Indian colleagues who work here with us. India is an important voice within the UN system.”

India has highlighted its national efforts to tackle extreme heat, including Heat Action Plans, use of digital tools for last-mile alerts and promotion of low-cost cooling solutions, at a high-level dialogue held as part of the 80th anniversary session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Sibi George, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, attended the High-Level Solutions Dialogue on Early Warning and Extreme Heat on Monday.

Speaking at the session, George underlined India’s readiness to work with partners to support the Global South in addressing environmental disasters triggered by rising global temperatures, the MEA said in a social media post.
