Were 32 persons burnt to death inside Nepal’s parliament? Here’s what Nepal Police says

There have been rumours in Nepal that 32 missing bodies were found inside the parliament building that was burnt by mobs. Here is the fact check by Nepal Police.

Amid the nationwide violence in Nepal, a rumour circulated saying that 32 missing bodies had been found in the ruins of the parliament.

Mobs on Tuesday set fire to Nepal’s parliament in Kathmandu. They had also breached the barricades and vandalised the premises Monday. The subsequent crackdown led to at least 17 deaths in Kathmandu — two deaths elsewhere in the country took the national toll that day to 19.

A day after such rumours began circulating, the Nepali Police on Wednesday published a fact check on X.

In a post in Nepali, the police said that the claim that 32 missing people were found dead inside the parliament were “misleading” and the image in circulation was from a previous event from a protest in another country.

“The Nepali Police requests that no one creates or spreads such misleading, negative news that incites fear and terror among the public and further aggravates the situation during this difficult time,” the police further said.

After the nationwide violence on Tuesday, the Nepali Army took over the law enforcement in the country. The Army arrested 26 persons for vandalism and looting in the country

In a statement on Wednesday, the Nepali Army said that “anarchist groups and persons” have infiltrated ongoing protests in the country and engaged in criminal activities like looting, vandalism, and attempted rape.

In nationwide violence on Tuesday, mobs torched Nepal’s parliament, Singha Durbar (the seat of the government), Supreme Court, and many government offices, including courthouses. They also broke several jails and freed hundreds of prisoners. They attacked the official presidential residence and the private home of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. They also attacked homes of former PMs Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, Sher Bahadur Deuba, and Jhalanath Khanal.

In the attack on Deuba’s home, he and his wife, foreign minister Arzu Rana Deuba, were assaulted. In the attack on Khanal’s home, his wife, Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, was reportedly burnt to death. In another attack, at least three policemen were reportedly killed.
