Trump impact? US sees fewer Indians visiting the country, first dip since 2001 outside Covid curb

Indian travel to the United States recorded a rare dip in June 2025, with official data showing fewer visitors compared to the same month last year.

For the first time this millennium—excluding the Covid years—the number of Indians travelling to the United States fell in June 2025 compared to the same month last year.

Data from the US Commerce Department’s National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) shows that 2.1 lakh Indians visited America in June, down eight per cent from 2.3 lakh in June 2024. Provisional figures for July also point to a 5.5 per cent year-on-year drop.

The trend extends beyond India. International arrivals to the US declined by 6.2 per cent in June, seven per cent in May, and eight per cent in March. February saw a 1.9 per cent dip, while January and April bucked the pattern with increases of 4.7 per cent and 1.3 per cent, respectively.

India remains the fourth-largest source market for visitors to the US. After Mexico and Canada—both land-border countries—India ranks as the second-largest overseas source, behind the UK. Together with Brazil, these five markets accounted for nearly 60 per cent of all international arrivals in June, according to NTTO.
