Modi on Monday said India will withstand the upcoming US tariff pressure, stressing that his government will continue to strengthen the country’s resilience and protect the interests of small entrepreneurs, farmers and livestock rearers.
Two days before the US tariffs on Indian goods come into effect, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said his government would withstand the economic pressure and continue strengthening the country’s resilience.
“No matter how much pressure comes, we will keep increasing our strength to withstand it,” Modi said while addressing a public gathering in Ahmedabad’s Nikol area. He stressed that small entrepreneurs, farmers and livestock rearers would remain his government’s top priority.
The 50 per cent tariff penalty, imposed by the Trump administration over India’s purchase of Russian oil, is set to take effect on August 27. A day earlier, US Vice President J D Vance told NBC News that President Donald Trump had applied “aggressive economic leverage,” including “secondary tariffs on India,” to reduce Moscow’s oil revenues and force Russia to halt its attacks on Ukraine.
Without directly naming Washington, Modi said, “Aaj duniya me arthik swarth wali rajniti hai, sab koi apna karne me lage hain. Usse hum bhali bhanti dekh rahe hain (Today in this world, there is politics of economic self-interest, everyone looks out for themselves. We are witnessing this). From the soil of Ahmedabad, I promise you that the interests of small entrepreneurs, shopkeepers, farmers and livestock rearers are of utmost priority for Modi… Dabav kitna hi kyun na aaye, hum jhelne ki apni takat badhate jayenge (No matter how much pressure comes, we will keep increasing our strength to withstand it).”
The Prime Minister also inaugurated, laid foundation stones and dedicated projects worth ₹5,400 crore across Ahmedabad and Gujarat, including railway projects worth over ₹1,400 crore.
Calling for Swadeshi and urging people to choose ‘Make in India’ products, he said, “Swadeshi and Atmanirbhar Bharat are important roadmaps for a Viksit Bharat.” Modi added that Gujarat is giving great energy to the Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign, backed by “two decades of hard work.”
