‘Frank and constructive’: Kremlin lauds Putin–Trump phone call after talks with Zelenskyy

Following White House talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders, Trump announced that he called Putin and “began the arrangements” for a meeting between the Ukrainian and Russian leaders

US President Donald Trump called his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, during his meeting with European leaders at the White House, with Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov describing the conversation “frank and constructive.”

“Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump expressed support for the continuation of direct negotiations between the delegations of Russia and Ukraine,” Ushakov said.

Following White House talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders, Trump announced that he called Putin and “began the arrangements” for a meeting between the Ukrainian and Russian leaders.

  • Trump briefed the Russian president about his talks with European leaders and Zelenskyy at the Oval Office

  • Putin and Trump called for continuing direct talks between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations

  • The two leaders also discussed the idea of increasing the level of direct Russia-Ukraine talks

  • Putin highlighted the importance of the US leader’s efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis

  • Putin thanked Trump for his hospitality during his recent visit to Alaska and for the progress achieved at the summit in Alaska

Zelenskyy-Putin to meet soon

Putin and Zelenskyy looked set for a peace summit after fast-moving talks Monday between Donald Trump and European leaders that focused on the key issue of long-term security guarantees for Kyiv.

Hopes of a breakthrough rose after Trump said he had spoken by phone with Russian counterpart Putin, whom he met in Alaska last week, following a “very good” meeting with the Europeans and the Ukrainian president at the White House.

It would be the first meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian leaders since Moscow’s brutal invasion nearly three and a half years ago, and comes as Trump tries to live up to his promise to quickly end the war.
