FirstUp: Top US generals to meet at Quantico, US govt shutdown deadline today….The big news

Tuesday is shaping up to be a packed day with several big events on the calendar.

To start with, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is set to convene a meeting of senior military officers near Washington. President Donald Trump is also expected to make an appearance at the gathering.

Meanwhile, a potential US government shutdown looms large. If lawmakers fail to break the deadlock over funding beyond September 30, it could kick in today, halting pay for hundreds of thousands of federal workers and delaying key services.

On the diplomatic front, South Korea and the United States will hold their first working group talks on visa systems for Korean companies operating in the US.

Back in India, with the Bihar Assembly elections fast approaching, the Election Commission will release the final voter list prepared under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

And in sports, cricket fans have plenty to look forward to as India takes on Sri Lanka in the 2025 ODI Women’s World Cup.

Here’s a look at everything lined up for the day ahead.

US generals’ meeting

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is set to host a rare gathering of hundreds of senior military leaders at Quantico, a Marine Corps base about 30 miles south of the Pentagon.

According to the Washington Post, all officers ranked brigadier general and above are required to attend. Around 800 officers currently fall into that category, according to the Congressional Research Service.

Typically, such large assemblies are planned months in advance, but this time, even senior admirals and generals were given no details about the agenda beforehand. The unusual and logistically complex event will be one of the very few occasions when so many top military figures are brought together in the same room.

President Donald Trump, confirming his attendance to NBC News, played down the speculation. “It’s really just a very nice meeting talking about how well we’re doing militarily, talking about being in great shape, talking about a lot of good, positive things. It’s just a good message,” he said.

US stares at a government shutdown

Funding for federal agencies runs out today, raising the prospect of a government shutdown.

If no agreement is reached between lawmakers and President Donald Trump, much of the federal government, from national parks to taxpayer services to small business loans, will be forced to pause operations this week.

Under the Antideficiency Act, agencies cannot spend money without approved appropriations. When a funding bill expires, departments and programs affected must close or scale back, unless specific legal exemptions apply.

In practice, this means non-essential services stop, thousands of federal workers are furloughed without pay, and many government facilities temporarily shut their doors until funding is restored.

South Korea, US to hold talks on visa systems

South Korea and the United States are holding their first working group talks on Tuesday to address visa concerns affecting Korean companies operating in the US.

South Korea’s national security adviser Wi Sung-lac told reporters on Monday that the government was working to resolve the matter quickly to create a better environment for Korean investments in the United States, he said, according to Reuters.

The discussions come in the wake of a major raid earlier this month at a Hyundai Motor car battery plant under construction in Georgia, where hundreds of South Korean workers were arrested.

Bihar’s final voter list to be released

The Election Commission is set to release the final voter list for Bihar today, prepared through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

The updated list is expected to include around 7.3 crore voters, with nearly 14 lakh new registrations added.

The SIR process, which began in June 2025, asked all 7.89 crore existing voters to re-submit their details. The draft list, published on August 1, included 7.24 crore names after removing about 6.5 lakh entries of deceased, migrated, or duplicate voters. The final list will now streamline preparations for the upcoming state assembly elections.

Publishing the final list is a key step in election readiness, allowing political parties to fine-tune their outreach and candidates to connect directly with voters ahead of Bihar’s polls later this year.

India vs Sri Lanka Women’s ODI final

India is all set to chase history as the ICC Women’s ODI Cricket World Cup 2025 kicks off today. The opening match will see the Indian women’s cricket team take on Sri Lanka at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

Harmanpreet Kaur will lead the side as captain, with Smriti Mandhana as vice-captain, guiding a mix of experienced players and rising stars.
