Bangladesh’s Yunus arrives in New York: Awami supporters throw eggs at his entourage | Watch video

Protesters pelted eggs at Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus’ entourage in New York City and called him ’terrorist’, according to footage shared on social media.

Bangladesh’s interim ruler Muhammad Yunus faced protests in New York on Monday as he arrived in the city to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session with senior officials.

Protesters from ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Bangladesh Awami League (BAL) party threw eggs at Yunus’ entourage, according to ANI.

Footage appeared on the social media with captions saying that eggs were thrown at Yunus’ entourage which comprised Aktar Hossain and Tasnim Zara, outside the JFK International Airport. Firstpost could not independently confirm the authenticity of those posts.

In the video, protesters could be heard calling them “terrorists” amid anti-Yunus slogans, as per ANI.

Akhtar, who was among those targeted by protesters, was one of the leaders of the agitating groups that were part of the movement that ousted Hasina last year.

After weeks of street protests and violence forced Hasina to resign as the prime minister and flee to India for her life, those groups and the military propped Yunus as the unelected leader of the country. Since then, he has presided over a continuing wave of political retribution, political violence, violence against minorities like Hindus, and mainstreaming of Islamists in the country whose rise had been checked by Hasina.

Yunus has also not held elections so far. After many flip-flops, Yunus announced last month he would hold elections in February 2026. But, considering his flip-flops and weak authority, there are doubts whether those elections would take place. In any case, as part of the political retribution, he has banned Hasina’s BAL, the largest party in the country, from contesting elections. He has also declared its student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), as a terrorist organisation.
