US President Donald Trump reportedly confronted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during tense phone calls over the US-brokered Gaza ceasefire plan, expressing frustration at Netanyahu’s cautious approach. The dispute arose after Hamas issued a conditional acceptance of Trump’s peace framework, agreeing to release all remaining hostages in exchange for an Israeli withdrawal, provided certain conditions were met.

According to Axios, Netanyahu dismissed Hamas’ response as “nothing to celebrate,” prompting Trump to exclaim, “I don’t know why you’re always so f***ing negative. This is a win. Take it.” The heated exchange shows Trump’s determination to push the Israeli leader toward compromise, asserting firm control over the ceasefire process and highlighting the urgency of ending the Gaza conflict.

Hamas’ conditional agreement

Hamas’ “yes, but” response marked the closest the region has come to a breakthrough in months. While the group indicated willingness to release hostages in return for a full Israeli military withdrawal, it requested further negotiations on details.

Netanyahu reportedly viewed this as a rejection calling it ‘nonsense’ and sought to coordinate with the US to prevent the narrative that Hamas had agreed positively. For Trump, however, the conditional acceptance represented a diplomatic opening that could not be ignored. Within hours, he urged Israel to pause airstrikes in Gaza, a move Netanyahu implemented three hours later.

Trump pushes for a deal but Netanyahu in doubt

Privately, the call reflected a sharp contrast in approaches. Trump, concerned that Hamas might have outright rejected the proposal, saw progress and pressed Netanyahu to seize the opportunity. Netanyahu, meanwhile, remained cautious, weighing domestic political risks and the implications of a temporary ceasefire.

Despite the tense exchange, both sides eventually reached agreement. Netanyahu later publicly praised Trump and emphasised areas of alignment, while the White House reiterated its commitment to pursuing peace and coordinating closely with Israel.

Following the phone calls, Trump continued to pressure both Israel and Hamas. He warned Hamas against delay tactics and stressed that the hostages’ release was a non-negotiable condition for the deal. Concurrently, Israel agreed to an updated map for the initial withdrawal of forces from parts of Gaza.
