The Philippines is no stranger to seasonal floods but this year’s rains have been especially destructive.

Weeks of heavy monsoon rains have left much of the Philippines submerged but the floodwaters have also unleashed a wave of public anger. At the center of it are the children of powerful families flaunting wealth while infrastructure meant to keep communities dry collapses. The crisis has spotlighted alleged corruption in flood control projects.

Why Are Floods Sparking Anger In Philippines?

The Philippines is no stranger to seasonal floods but this year’s rains have been especially destructive. Streets have turned into rivers, millions have been stranded and hospitals are treating outbreaks of leptospirosis. Philippines President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr admitted that some projects that were aimed at controlling floods never even existed- including a supposed flood control dam. The country’s economic planning minister said 70% of the money allocated for flood works was siphoned off. The fallout has already toppled powerful figures as the House Speaker resigned and the Senate leader was ousted over links to questionable contractors.

What Are ‘Nepo Babies’ Being Targetted?

The fury isn’t limited to politicians and contractors as ordinary Filipinos are now directing their anger at their children- branded online as “nepo babies.” On TikTok, Facebook and X, users are sharing clips of privileged heirs flaunting Dior, Fendi and Hermes while sarcastically thanking taxpayers for “sponsoring” their lifestyle. Some of those targeted have disabled comments or deleted their accounts altogether.

Much of the outrage has centered on Pacifico and Sarah Discaya, contractors whose firm won billions in flood control contracts. Once hailed for their “rags-to-riches” story, the couple are now symbols of greed. Videos have resurfaced showing them boasting about three dozen luxury cars, including multiple Mercedes Maybachs and Porsches in matching colours.

What Happens Next?

A mass anti-corruption protest is planned for September 21, the anniversary of martial law under Marcos Sr. President Marcos Jr has promised an inquiry to “unmask the swindlers” but urged protesters to remain peaceful. Activist group Creators Against Corruption said, “We will be relentless. We will be loud. We will be a mirror held up to power, and we will not look away until justice is served.”
