A vessel sailing near the Gulf of Aden caught fire after being struck by what is believed to be a missile, according to the British military.

Yemeni local media reported that the missile, suspected to be ballistic, was launched from territory controlled by the Houthi group, which is backed by Iran.

“A vessel has been hit by an unknown projectile. The vessel is reported to be on fire,” AP quoted the UKMTO as saying.

Soon after the incident, a ship sailing in the Gulf of Aden, around 235 kilometres (150 miles) off the coast of Aden, reported witnessing “a splash and smoke” in the distance, according to the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) centre.

The UKMTO called it an attack and advised vessels in the region to remain cautious, a warning that was also echoed by the private security company Ambrey.

Shortly after, the UKMTO confirmed, “A vessel has been hit by an unknown projectile.” It further stated, “The vessel is reported to be on fire.”

The Houthi, however, has not claimed the attack.

The Houthi rebels have been carrying out missile and drone strikes on Israel and targeting ships in the Red Sea, claiming their actions are in solidarity with Palestinians amid the war in Gaza. Over the past two years, their attacks have severely disrupted global trade along this vital route, which previously saw around USD 1 trillion worth of goods pass through annually.

The group paused its strikes briefly during a temporary ceasefire but later faced a weeks-long barrage of airstrikes ordered by then-US President Donald Trump. In July, the Houthis escalated further, sinking two vessels, killing at least four crew members, and reportedly holding others captive.
