The US House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has released the first batch of documents from the federal investigation into disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. The release, which consists of more than 33,000 pages of records, comes after the committee, led by Chairman James Comer, issued a subpoena to the Department of Justice (DOJ).

The publicly posted documents, which include years-old court filings related to Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, as well as bodycam footage from police searches, have drawn mixed reactions. While the release fulfils a promise of public disclosure, the committee’s ranking Democrat, Representative Robert Garcia, stated that the “overwhelming majority” of the documents had already been made public through previous court proceedings and other releases. According to Garcia, only about three per cent of the pages contained new information, primarily consisting of flight logs for Epstein’s private plane from 2000 to 2014.

The release of the documents is part of a broader political struggle in Washington, with both Democrats and some Republicans pushing for the full disclosure of all files related to the Epstein case. A bipartisan effort led by Representatives Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna has called for a floor vote to force the DOJ to release all files within 30 days. House Speaker Mike Johnson and the Oversight Committee, however, argue that the committee’s ongoing investigation and subpoena process are the proper avenues for disclosure.

The documents, which the DOJ has stated it will continue to produce while redacting victim identities and sensitive material, have been posted online for public review. Their release follows months of criticism of the Trump administration, which has been under pressure from both sides of the aisle to provide greater transparency on the case.
