Following the tragic shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump has ordered that all national flags across the country be flown at half-staff. This observance will continue through to Sunday, August 31.

The decision has been made in honour of the victims of the mass shooting, which occurred at a Catholic school in Minneapolis. The White House issued guidance on the proper procedure for flying the flag at half-staff. According to the instructions, the flag should first be hoisted to the peak momentarily before being lowered to the half-staff position. When the flag is taken down in the evening, it should again be raised briefly to the peak before being lowered completely.

In an official statement, President Trump described the events of Wednesday as “senseless acts of violence perpetrated.” His directive applies to the White House, all public buildings and grounds, military posts and naval stations, as well as all naval vessels of the federal government in the District of Columbia. The order extends across the US and its territories. Additionally, all US embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities overseas have been requested to follow the same protocol.

The shooting took place on Wednesday morning at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. The gunman, identified as Robin Westman, opened fire on the school grounds, killing two children and injuring 17 others. The suspect, a man in his early 20s, also took his own life during the incident.

Reports indicate that Westman did not have an extensive or known criminal history. The attack occurred just two days after the school year began at Annunciation Catholic School, a private elementary institution with an enrolment of approximately 395 students. The school is affiliated with Annunciation Catholic Church, both located in a residential neighbourhood in the southeast part of Minneapolis, the largest city in the state of Minnesota.

In a post on Truth Social, President Trump confirmed he had been briefed on the “tragic shooting” and stated that the White House would continue to monitor the situation closely.
