Two Indian nationals have been sentenced to five years and one month in prison, along with 12 strokes of the cane, for assaulting and robbing two sex workers. The incident dates back to April this year when the accused arrived in Singapore from India.

Arokkiyasami Daison, 23, and Rajendran Mayilarasan, 27, pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt while robbing the victims, reported The Straits Times.

According to court proceedings, while walking in the Little India area, the men were approached by an unknown individual who offered them the contact numbers of women providing sexual services. Instead of taking up the offer legitimately, the two men decided to use the opportunity to steal from the women.

Arokkiyasami suggested the idea to Rajendran, telling him they needed money. Rajendran agreed, and by that evening, they arranged to meet the first victim at a hotel.

Once inside the room at around 6 pm, the men attacked her. They tied her hands and legs with clothing, slapped her, and took jewellery, SGD 2,000 in cash, her passport, and bank cards.

Their second crime happened later that night. At about 11 pm, they lured another woman to a different hotel. When she entered, they dragged her by her arms, and Rajendran held his hand over her mouth to silence her. They stole SGD 800, two mobile phones, and her passport. Before leaving, they warned her not to move until they came back.

The incident came to light after the second victim told about the incident to another person, leading to a police report and swift investigations.

Both men pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt while committing robbery.

Arokkiyasami told the judge, “My father passed away last year. I have three sisters, one of whom is married, and we have no money. That is why we did this.” Rajendran added: “My wife and child are alone in India, and they are financially suffering.”

Under Singapore law, anyone convicted of causing hurt during a robbery faces between five and 20 years in prison, along with at least 12 strokes of the cane.

Both men received the minimum sentence of five years and one month in prison, plus 12 strokes each.
